View Full Version : Question Lipo for PRo-boat Mini-v?

I am going to order a Pro-boat Mini-v soon and since it does not come with a battery why not go lipo.

The only lipo chager I have is the one for my Blade BCX2 heli. It can charge a 7.4 2 cell lipo (800mah) and is a balancer too. Can I use the BCX2 battery in the Mini-V or is there something better that will work with the E-Flight charger.

Thanks!

Thats new, I thought they came with a battery.. geuss not though.. A 2s lipo would work good, maybe even 3 if you dont fry the ESC... 800MAH should work too, but it also depends on the amp draw of them too. I say try it and check the temp every once in a while. It uses the same electronics as the mini-t... also dont forget you need a LVC or just check it every 5 minutes to make sure you dont over discharge... let me know how this lil boat runs, I want one to make brushless, should be pritty fast on a brushless system

I had a Mini-T and all I ran in it was a custom 6 cell 1100mah NiMh battery. Never failed. I also ran a 7 cell a few times but went back to the 6 to be safe.

There is a video on either youtube or google of a brushless Mini-V and it rips! I was also surprised how stable it was. I'll keep mine stock since it's just for running in the pool.

The BCX2 charger will also charge a 3 cell LiPo. I have one of the Mini-V's, The recommended battery is a 7.2V 1100 MAh, similar to what the 1:18 scale cars/trucks run from Associated and Losi. The 2 in 1 receiver/ESC has a HPI RS-4 style plug on it. The 1100 MAh battery runs the boat for about 20 minutes at speeds I estimated to be between 20-25 mph.

I radar'd mine wth a 3 cell lipo, 17MPH, they're cool. One major problem: flip it and the ESC is toast, it's not waterproof $45 replacement.

Was the video a 3 cell LiPo or 7.2V nimh as included in the package ?

I bought this motor because it looked nice and I might need it for a project someday.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260101855862&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=016

Now I think I may buy a mini-v and fit this 20mm x 40mm motor in there. I have used a Mamba 25amp car controller with a heat sink on it in a previous mico mono and it worked great! That is with a Mega 16 15 3 turn (too big and heavy but it was bullistic).
This motor and lipos might do the trick...

It's not too hard to waterproof an ESC, OSE has DP270 conformal epoxy that does the trick!

I doubt the esc in the mini v has 3.0V per cell cutoff for lipos. Be careful or you will ruin your lipos if you discharge too low. Surely someone makes an add-on that can be used with brushed esc's to provide the 3.0V per cell cuttoff? Anyone?

I used both the 7.4 and 11.1 800mah eflite lipos, These little batteries are perfect, I am currently waiting on parts to fabricate a cooling system. Can any one suggest how to water proof this baby? Something simple, easy to remove, and reusable.

The Mini V is a Blast I found a couple of mods that are a must though:

-need a longer antenna support, this doubles the range and suppress the glitching.
-electrical grease on the wires where they penetrate the RX and ESC box. (I also put it in the channel on the cover and all over the switch)
-If your going to upgrade to a 11.1v Lipo, you need to upgrade the drive, the universal joints aren't strong enough for the torque of the 11.1volt battery.
-if you use it in a pool 80% of the time then I'd stick with the 7.4 lipo.
-if you use a Lipo fabricate a colling system.

Enjoy, SKOT

for waterproofing look for CorrosionX. on the other hand, i had a hard time finding that stuff and got something else called INOX. small white can with blue label (says inox in red). got it at true value hardware, near the wd-40.

Ok
I am guessing that the videos are with the stock motor Yes?
I have installed the castle creations mamba compitition x package.(8000kv) I tried running it with a 700mah nimh, Not enough power. slow to rev.
I run it on a 3300 nimh Runs great but the battery is too big for the boat
Any suggestions? Also where can I get better universal joints?

8000kv is too much. multiply kv x volts to get RPM.
56000 RPM is about 2x what you want. try for 25000-30000RPM.
General rule for motors is: higher kv = more RPM at the cost of torque.
boats need lots of torque since the prop is in water.
a brushless with 4000ish kv will do better for this application.

Like a 4200 KV Mamba system and it should stay pretty cool too.

Again if the esc and RX aren't water proof, TAPE THE HATCH!

put your electronics in a condom,,yes condom cheap and it works,, also get some more foam into the hull, 2 cell lipo thunder power 1320 work great, get a timer set it at 9 mins 80% rule of discharge,, remember do not over discharge the lipo below 80%
i have tried the 3 cell lipo but with the stock set-up it will not last long unless you have cooling to motor and esc.,, time to go brushless!

put the battery a little further back. You're nose heavy. That's why it's spinning out.

I would check the rated voltage of the stock motor before running a 3s lipo (11.1 volts) most of those mabuchi motors are only rated at 9.6 volts so you will definitely be frying a few of them , but at least they are cheap . I'm an airplane guy and yes I have killed a few of those 9.6v motors before going all brushless a few years ago. I'm really interested in the new proboat mini cat looks fun.

I have a 7.4-1100 Common Sense lipo for my completely modded Mini-V. There is a complete thread on another site. The motor for mine is a Grauper 480bb with coiling coil with a regular motor mount but had to do some cutting but is smooth. Yes, Corrosion-x works perfect but keep away from wires cause in time wires become brittle. Probably one shot a year is good. Ray said Pd-270 waterproofing is good but i don't know where to get it. Floatation is a must. I have had very good luck with small bubble plastic rolled up in small coils and taped and ca'd or used 3m-77 spray glue on one edge of roll and stuck it in and it stayed. I'll leave, i talk to much.

I get mine here, great stuff but you would need to take the case off RX/ESC unit to coat everything but heat sink.
