Jesse,
What does your LHS carry? You can usually try before you buy and have the ability to get any problems taken care of through them including getting accessories in the future. Also go through and read many of the previous posts on this subject.
In brief: (my opinion based on using G3.5 and fsone)
G3.5 has been around quite a while and has many planes and has had many of the bugs worked out although it seems to be an ongoing issue for any software. I believe that if helicopters are your thing this is the simulator for you or if you are more interested in Great Planes products.
FSOne is newer and is still going through some growth; trying to work out bugs with different computer variatons and a limited number of planes available at this time. The graphics and flight behavior really shine in this program. The helicopters are a bit too perfect and not as realistic as G3.5. I beleive that this is the simulator to get for gliders and planes or if you are really biased toward Eflight and Hanger Nine products.
I have not tried Phoenix and will probably not due to all of the hype. It seems to be well liked, but does not have a supplied controller option which means that you have to use your own, which is optional for G3.5 and FSOne. Many feel it is great, but I feel like I'am being sold a time share everytime the subject comes up.
I started with FMS and soon became frustrated trying to use a game controler. I used a friends G3.0 (now G3.5 which I have also used for the helicpter training) for about three months when I decided on FSOne because I liked the planes offered and was impressed by the feel of graphics and plane response when trying it at my LHS.
To answer your question they are both very good and will serve you well. I would just decide if I wanted to focus on helicopters or fixed wing planes and make my decision.

Exactly, why spend the extra $$ on another controller when you can use your own, not only you save dollars in the process but you become very familiar how the heli responds with your controller.

So if you do buy G3.5 or FSOne then use your own TX then you have a lovely mantle piece ornament in which people can gather around on cold winter nights drinking brandy and you can tell them how it came to be and the $$ you wasted in the process

You can buy a cheap, used Futaba on eBay and use it as a dedicated controller for Phoenix. That's what I did when, for some strange reason, 2 brand new Futaba 6EXA radios fried while playing Phoenix. The guys at Phoenix replaced my USB dongle, just to be on the safe side, but claimed they found nothing wrong with my original dongle and it supposedly worked fine when they tested it themselves. However, I had to go get my second radio repaired (the first was replaced). Anyway, in order to finally use the software, I ended up buying the cheapo non-computer Futaba radio and it does work fine now, although I will admit I much prefer having a plain USB controller and not having to charge my Tx just to fly a sim.
However, I find that I play Phoenix infrequently compared to my other sims, particularly Aerofly. Phoenix has awesome graphics, but I have a larger selection of planes to fly in AFPD (dozens an dozens more) and honestly, they feel more like the real thing than the planes do in Phoenix, at least to me they do (well, the few planes that I have tried).
I have tried RealFlight in my LHS (several times) and much prefer AFPD to it. I've only gotten my hands on FSOne once, so I'll reserve judgement on it. As of right now AFPD is the best sim to me.

if you want to use the included remote for a sim, the G3.5 remote feels and looks better.
you would think that someones has both sim's and has compared them...
My G3.5 is awesome. Just found their knew swap page, so not only do you get the included planes, but you can download free planes from the swap page-about 300 free planes and helicopters, all rated on how ''real'' they fly

flyin C,
I have used the supplied controllers for both G3.5 and FSOne for many hours and they both feel cheap. G3.5 uses a Futaba made chassis. Now I use a 9CHP so I am more comfortable with a Futaba design, but the controller that G3.5 uses is not comparable to a 9C. I would say they are equally bad compared to "real" transmitters (Futaba, JR or Spektrum). I could swap either for the Esky controller, which came with my HB CP2, and not notice any significant difference. The supplied controller is just easier to set up and be used out of the box.
I need to add that I briefly considered using my beloved 9C with FSOne, but in hindsight I am relieved that better judgment took over and I purchased the TacCon, with the sim, to use for practice. If I did this for a living or competitively then I would use my "real" controller, but I am just a weekend warrior and would rather put the wear and tear on the inexpensive TacCon.
I use both programs for different purposes (G3.5 for heli training and FSOne for planes and glider fun). I am just happy that competition is pushing all simulators to get better.

here is the front page of the airplane swap page.

that is for G3.5, it has more realistic planes and helis than the old G3 swap page that LuieB linked you to. They get knew planes every other day at least and are all rated.

Thanks, I thought that was the page that I linked. I knew that there were two sites, one easy to find and one sort of out of the way. :)

Am I the only one that uses aero flight pro deluxe?
I tried G3 and FMS and was less than impressed but I find afpd great ,
The only time I think G3 is better is slope soaring off the cliff site , that is quite good
I haven tried Phoenix yet

What type of aircraft are you interested in most? I heard for helicopters, Phoenix is the best sim and aircraft is still a toss up.
The CONS I've heard about Phoenix is the aircraft doesn't break into pieces when you crash. I prefer this since the flying experience should simulate both good and bad things about flying, crashing being the bad experience - lol. Then I hard that REFLEX has you flying in a box.
Can anyone confirm this?
