View Full Version : Discussion Using a simulator with real transmitter

I have been looking hard at the pros and cons of several flight simulators, notably Realflight G3.5 and Phoenix.

There is no need to start another X vs Y thread, but I have a specific question:

Phoenix requires that I use a real transmitter. We have several to hand, including 2 oldish Futabas (1 non-computer, 1 computer) and my new Multiplex Cockpit SX.

In order to use the Futabas,
1) is it essential to stop them actually transmitting RF when using the simulator?
2) how does one stop transmitting RF?
In the Phoenix manual, it suggests removing the crystal, but I'm not too happy about regularly taking the crystal in and out, as I fear this might damage either the crystal or the socket.

The Cockpit SX presents another issue, since it has no removable crystal (the RF frequency is adjustable): here, I'm completely baffled as to what to do.

Any answers or reflections would be useful.

the futaba adapters have links in them that disable the RF however not all futabas support this feature so may need the xtal or RF module removed. My old transmitter was one of these (on another sim) and removing the module or xtal and had no issues doing this. I had models on different frequencies so swapped xtals regularly too. Before the americans kick in. it is legal and safe to change xtals in the TX, its just the FCC that say you cant.

I dont know the SX but I would expect a fully synth tx to have the option of not transmitting during power up.

Hi John,

I use a Cockpit SX with Phoenix. The transmitter detects that you are plugged into something and does not transmit (the blue LED does not blink)

I do however have to switch it PUPILM mode to work, which means the trims do not work. SIMUL mode does not work. I have yet to see if this is a problem with G3 (I use the transmitter that comes with it)

regards,

Tony
