I'm now at the stage of purchasing an ESC / BEC for my boat and I'd like a bit of feedback.

The motor in question is a -
Caldercraft CEM900T (Standard brushed type)
12Volt,
3000rpm@ 12V
No load current 0.4A
Current at nominal voltage 5.0A
Stall Current 20.3A

Two speed controls have been suggested to me are a Viper 40 & a MiniCon Max.

First, I want variable forward and reverse speed.
Second, I want it to include BEC circuitry so I don't need a separate receiver Battery.
From the info I have so far, both these ESC are in the $100 range which seems a little excessive compared to what I'd pay for a 25A brushed ESC/BEC for aircraft (admittedly they don't have a reverse).
The Viper is rated at 40A. Am I going to loose any sensitvity using a device which is rated at nearly twice the stall current of the motor ?

I have just found a link to the Mtronics Viper Marine 25, which seems to be more in line with my motor current

You won't lose any sensitivity... but instead look for a Viper Marine 15 or 10 even, as you don't need to cover the stall current with these controllers! With other controllers, yes... but the Viper line has current-limiting protection (electronic current limiting, not a fuse!). A 15A unit is good for 15A (maybe with water cooling... ;-) ), but it also will never put out more than 15A, even to a stalled motor which might want to demand 20A.

well I use on my robbe najade a Proboat 50, and it seems to work well, even though the box does get a lil warm to the touch

Thanks guys, I now have enough info to make a choice.

nice things about the Vipers and marine esc's my emtronics, they have slots in the back that can accept watercooling pipes, the lil Pro-boat ones ("little blue box") dont, relying on the anodized aluminum to do the cooling making them prone to overheating if in an enclosed space. That aside, I swear by mine in the Najade
