View Full Version : Increasing rudder and elevator throws

Hello all,
I have a question about how to increase your elevator, and rudder throws. I have my transmitter set up to provide maximum throws on both, but I'm not getting the travel that I would like. How do you go about getting the most throw possible?
Thanks,
Steven

You may already have your plane setup like this, but maximum throw is achieved by connecting the control rod to the outer most hole on the servo horn and to the hole closest to the control surface on the control horn.
So, if you don't have things set up like this already, then I would try it. And, then use your radio to set the amount of travel you want. If you do already have things set up like this, then I don't know what else you can do.

Mitch,
That is the setup that I have. I was just trying to get a little more out of it. I have noticed on the larger scaled 3D planes, that alot of the servos are mounted really close to the elevator , and rudder. I haven't looked or thought about it alot, but I was wondering if you have shorter links , would you achieve any more movement. It seems like the servo arms move a lot more than the actual rudder and elevators do.

Large planes have tail-mounted servos for two reasons: Balance against heavy gas engines, and to reduce slop in the control linkage. They can achieve full 3D rates by doing two things: using maximum throw with computer radios (140% travel or so), and by using aftermarket servo arms that extend up to two inches from the center to the last hole. You can try getting more throw by finding a longer servo arms that will fit your servo.

Thanks everyone. I'll maybe try the longer arms.
