Flyers are up for the Bellevue Regatta coming up in June (http://nwrcsm.freeyellow.com/2007NWRegattaFlyer.pdf).
Last year, due to this wonderful bulletin board, we managed to catch
the Northwest RC Shipmodelers (http://nwrcsm.freeyellow.com/index.html) unaware, and ran them plumb dry of
entry forms. They had to make up 20 more entry forms, and a second row of pop up tents had to be started last year.
Can't say that will happen again, but it was great to meet several people on these boards in person. And we all got to find out how well or how awful we really ran our boats. :D
This year it sounds like several people here including myself either have new boats to sail, or are in practice to put last years boats to the test.
Looking forward to catching up with everyone, and first time meetings with anyone here that can make it to Bellevue,WA for the event.

You know I will be there bright and early. Designated table transporter and "Pond Master". Will be there with new boats this year and maybe 1 or 2 others just because. Looking forward to the regatta as there is always a lot to see from all over the Pacific NW.

umi, I have a Fiat Brava, (about the size of a ford focus hatchback) and I can get in
Yamato
Celestia
Gemini
Espirit D'Atlantique
Southampton
Field case
decorating table
suitcase (if needed)
(here's how i do it- field case in rear footwell, suitcase in passenger footwell, Yamato + Celestia on back seat, Southampton on passenger seat or on suitcase, Parcel shelf out, pasting table in the trunk, Espirit D'Atlantique on pasting table by back seat, Gemini behind Espirit on decorating table also).
so getting 4 boats into what ever you have got should be easy :)

Since I am hauling the tables down I will throw a couple of more in for those that have a need. ;)
Lee upshaw from Scale Shipyard and Gary King from West Coast Model Tugs will both be there. So if you are looking for a new prodject or some parts and are planning on attending, look them up. I am sure they will be more than happy to help.
I will get lots of pics and video this year with the new cameras ( room for 1700 plus :D ). I will be bringing the new boats ( ST-FTG, James E build), the Liberty, and maybe the Darby ( Kulshan) and Duantless ( Second Chance). Who knows what all will be going home with me afterwards ;) :p :D .
Remember to bring extra $$$ for the raffel as there arre always a lot of great prizes to be won. Hulls, kits, motors, Gift Certificates, rtr (pt boat), ect......
And of course, there will be a lot of great boats and people to see. Special note that lunch this year will be scaled back quite a bit from the past. Might want to bring some snack food/drink along. Hope to see more of you there!

Who will be working on the weather-dance for this? Our local opening regatta was rained on, Maple Bay was a very wet function - looking ahead brings similar weather - what's the local best-guess for Sunday? Events are fun but the boats don't always enjoy the rain.

I got to Bellevue a half hour early, and still ended up on the second row of pop ups.
The course was in the process of being set up, and the wind was zipping through the park. But that kept the clouds moving, and there was not a drop of rain all day.
Between chatting with people and filling out the registration work, I was just finishing up registration when the course officials started making last calls. After a breif captains meeting to answer any questions, everyone went back to prepping boats for launch.
I took my SDM tug down to the harbor and got some backing practice in. And felt ready to tackle the course. Once I got off the dock, I breezed right through the backing, and as I shifted to forward and got into the course proper, the SDM decided to do a loop. I naturally over corrected and sent it into the "shoreline", a couple of PVC pipes set on the pond as an obstacle. I brought the tug away from the shore, but once again over corrected and looped the boat back into the shoreline again. At this point I let shut down the throttels, recentered the controlls, and started again from a dead stop. The rest of the course went pretty well, but hitting the beach should be left for the armed forces.
I grabbed my fire boat next, and set it up for it's run, but had to pause, and grab Minyamo(tito neri) as they were doing large scale judging. When I got the fire boat down to the harbor, somewhere in there, it got to be Noon, and everyone broke for lunch. I grabbed a small sandwitch from the smorgasbord graciously setup by the Northwest RC Shipmodelers, and went back to my table to setup the Minyamo.
When the course reopened, I ran the Fireboat flawlessly throught the course. I had only minor trouble at the dock fighting the wind. I made sure to avoid that "evil" shoreline the SDM had rammed earlier,... an effort that would come back to haunt me.
I returned the fireboat, and started back with Minyamo only to find out there was line at the harbor, and it would be a while before my next run. I went back to the table setup the ferry boat and chatted with people as they came by the table. I got the ferryboat down to the harbor And Tom Stevens began giving me a hard time about how big a sailboat I had there. We joked about it, and as I tried to run things up, the ferry wasn't talking to the transmitter. I tried a couple different batteries, and on off positions of the switch, but the reciever didn't seem to be getting power. I switched out the Proboat ESC, for an old purple MCcar30, and voila, back in business. I locked down the ferry boat with a little time to spare before Minyamo's run. I used that time to practice backing. I got some advice from Ben and found that if I could keep the boat at a dead slow, backing up could be done in a straight and controlled fashion.
Minyamo out on the course performed beautifully. Once again I avoided that evil SDM ramming shoreline at the beginning of the course, and with the wind a little less gusty made some fine maneuvers at the dock. Ond of the things that changed in this years course was that it was set up a lot tighter. The "narrows bridge" obstical was set closer to the whirlpool, and it made the exiting for the second half the course somewhat tight. For some reason I consistently sailed past or up to the bridge before remembering I had to pass through the bridge out bound on the second half of the course. But I finished the course, and came in just in time to run the ferry boat. Tom Stevens popped up again to give me some ribbing about the large sail area, I took the opportunity to point out the faux sailboat keel I added to keep the ferry boat stable. He couldn't stop laughing. During the joking and chatter in the standby harbor somone pointed out that I had "cruised" the shoreline area with Minyamo....
It then came up, all ships were supposed to be a half ships Width from the "shoreline" as they passed through the obstacle. My two previous runs were doomed.... :o Once again, I had not read all the instructions on the course map. As I pondered this, thought out my course for the ferry boat, I realized that I had not plugged in the antenna on the ferry. Tom helped me get the boat open and reset just in time to run. The wind had picked up a little, but I kept the boat close to the shoreline as "required", and finished the course with a score good enough to place third in the large(in length) division. I have no Idea how the fireboat or Minyamo placed, or where their runs could be improved. It would be nice to get that feed back for the future.
If I have any advice for regatta participants, first time or vetrans, ALWAYS
read the instructions before you get on the course.
Thanks to Northwest RC Shipmodelers for a good time.
It's always a learning experience.

Billy Edward's Minyamo took third place in scale for the Large Division of the Regatta. Aimee Eng skippering her in the navigational event shows why she should just build and learn to read the instructions before skippering any boats in the future. ;)

Well as you read from Umis post, the weather report dropped the number of participants this year to 45 boats. No rain, but lotts of wind made for some interesting scoring out on the navigation course.Because of the wind, those with heavy vessels faired a little better than the lighter boats.
I brought 4 boats to compete with this year, including the ST-FTG and the new boat. I arrived a little latter than normal (not good when you are the Pond Master, table supplier, and pond props person). Got everything unloaded, canopy set, and boats on display in good time. The course came to gether quickly with 3 of us in the water setting everything. Had a chance to go get photos of most of the vessels in attendace after the skippers meeting and before I had to haul mine to the scale judging area ( all 4 in the same scale class--large). Judging going on, time to get some photos of boats on the water. Also had a chance to chat with the 3 other R/C Group members that came out to this event. Also helped Lee Upshaw of Scale Shipyard with setting up as I shared my canopy space with him.
With scale judging done, time to start the non stop action of putting 4 boats through their paces. First up was the Liberty ( medium sized old tug ). This boat handled every manuver in the course with greta results. Enough to earn a second place navigation. Next was the new tug build, James E. First time though a course and only the 3rd time in the water. The boat had issues when backing down the fisrt leg of the course. After that it performed great. Tied with Umi for third in navigation in that class. Next was the ST-FTG. Remember the weather report fromearlier with the wind. This caused the sea to be a little rough for a small boat with scale waves averaging 6-10'! And to make things funner, ended up helping to rescue another vessel at the harbor entrace before even starting. This little boat took a pounding and kept on going. A little squirly out there, especially behind Deception Pass ( whirl pool on front side of this) where it disapeared. All said and done there was a little water in side, but the boat finished and was safe. lastly was the Second Chance, my Duantless. Even though it has twin screws, it was buffeted by the wind out on the course. Not the best of my runs all day but satisfactory. The only vessel to hit anything on the course was the ST-FTG as it found the same shoreline that Umi found. But what can you expect when your boat is only 4 inches wide and have to be that close to the shoreline in huricane force weather.
All in all it was a great day. 3 awards, lots of great people, and a lot of fun to be had by all. As always, this show will have a lot of great models and hopefully I got photos of them. Will load them over the next couple of days.

Thanks for the kind words so far. Had to keep camera on me when running boats so that I could get the "shots" while waiting for my turn. Also helped 3 people with as their navigator through the course. We allow 1 person to help with the skipper in navigating as some parts of the course get to be a little confusing/tough to see for some. After unloading my equipment box last night, discovered that I got a 1st in navigation, not a second with my tug Liberty!
Will be posting latter tonight the groups only photos of the boats that were there. Stapats boat was looking pretty sweet eventhough it was not finished. Umi and my self each had 4 boats there while Lee had his hulls/kits displayed. If there were others there that I did not know, sorry I missed you. Amoung the contestants this year were 3 kids who did a pretty good job out there on the navigation and 1 in scale! Best of show went to Al Kinsman and the tug Pono. He had the highest combined score from scale judging and navigation. Judges choice went to Mels model of the Mustang. One of my favorite models there was Bill Bulls Green Rover, 1/100 British Naval Replenishment ship, and cargo ships. Both were scratch built from photos and a fiberglass mold that he has made. More photos tonight. :)

at ellesmere port last year, someone had a boat with a fire monitor, funniest thing was, when he fired it up, he had the female pool attendant pinned to the wall, as she would move sideways, the guy kept the monitor trained on her! :D she didnt know which way to go!!

Ghost--if I win the lottery I would love to come over there to play for a show/holliday. ;) :) You know you can always come over here to visit and play boats any time.

the course. Start at dock. Back down through gate. Then turn and run up near channel shoreline. Out around Deception Pass ( near whirlpool) then through twards the salom. Finish the salom and go to dock. Leave dock and go around barges back through Deception Pass. Out the pass to the "dog leg" gates @ 85' away. Make starboard turn around lighthouse, down the channel to the final docking that has you backing into the dock. DONE

last few photos from event. This is my Liberty on the course. They were taken by a freind with my camera while I was running the tug. The other photos are of Bill Bulls "Green Rover" and cargo ship. Bill built his own plug/mold for these boats ( and the same was used for a carrier also-not at this show). Completely scratch built off of nothing but photos. Very clean and crisp work.

Not a problem. That is the nice thing about this forum. If some one takes photos of an event, you will be able to see some here. Easier to attend this way as most of us can not travel all the time to all the great shows. Now for Foss Cup!!!
