Well guys here is my new spring project.I hope to have it ready for the spring sizzler. This design as been around since 1998(I think) Eddies daughter karen has taken over the business.Eddie ha bad alzhimers dease.Anyway this plane is a mythical idea that may have been produced in 20 or 30's Here's a few pictures.Power will be a 45/3 Jeti phaser on a 3to1 MAT Belt drive. Will start with round cells maybe go to lipo's.

More updates,Here are the leftside of the fuse with the stringers in place.Very time consuming when you are cutting all the stringers too  Next picture is the stablizer and elevators traced out onto a 1/16 central balsa core. This is a form of building taken from british scale model builders. Then will add balsa ribs and sand to shape.

Thank you all for the nice comments.Martin,W.S. is 83" and weight target is 12lbs.Covering is nelson's lite fab. Also I'm going to try to build my own wheels.Does anybody have a source for solid neoprene rubber? Thanxs,

KOMET44,
Beautiful airframe. Every year I go to WRAM I look at that plane and have to fight from buying a set of plans as I already have too many other projects in the hopper ;)
One thing I wanted to comment on is your powertrain choice. I'm not sure how fast you're planning on spinning that prop, but I have a Jeti 30-3 and as far as I know the 45-3 has the same RPM limitation. Best-case they say you can run a 2:1 gearbox, but anything more aggressive than that and you run the risk of throwing the magnets in the motor. Not fun.
Just thought you might want to take that into consideration. Otherwise I'm anxious to see now this progresses and the related flight reports :D

Martin thanxs for the link.Worked perfectly ;) Rob thank you also for the adivse.I'm going to do power testing on the bench first. If the 45/3 dosen't work I have at least a half dozen power systems sitting on the shelf waiting for planes to be built.

Just found this forum.
Looking through your posts on the Jalopaplane- Looks very good.
I have a set of Jalopaplane plans that I purchased from Eddie several years ago. Haven't got very far with them - other projects seem to keep coming up.
I was wondering what you have estimated for the all up weight and wing loading. My best guesses were around 35 oz/sq.ft - (12 - 15 lbs???)

Joshua thanxs for getting the fire lit under my A$$ I'll try to get on it this week.On_Again as for a total weight rite now with the elevators and one big servoand cowl, it is 49oz(look at the first page pictures.)The plane has independent elevators and rite now I have two pieces of tig wire going to a union connection to a single servo.I'm not likeing that one elevator could move before the other and I'm thinking about two servos in the tail area. Also to who ever builds this plane,"Build a stand shaped like the fuse".It's very clumbsy and the stringers get broken very easly :(

Well, my order of wood arrived at the doorstep yesterday :D .So with any luck I'll get build the wing this weekend.Anyhow here is a picture of the elevator and my homemade control horns(G10 fiberglass sheet).Maybe with luck I'll have it with me a the NEAT Fair. Finished or Not.

Well the build is back on!! :D Just started the wing ribs.I'm copying the ribs onto balsa with acetone. One problem is the cutting the ribs and trying to match the cut ribs against the plans. This all depends on how many times the plans get copied from the master.I have settled on sanding ribs to shape and cutting out only the bottom spars.Nice thing in my favor is that the wing is built flat ontop balsa sheeting. As I get all the ribs cut out I'll start posting pictures.

First of all the wing is built flat and on top of a 3/32 sheet balsa. So the next thing I did was to make a ruff out line of the wing by gluing the sheets of balsa togther. Then get your self carbon paper to cover the balsa sheeting.I then carefully put the plan over the sheeting and carbon paper.I traced all the rib positions, spar, and outline of the wing. To keep the plan from moving I used round cell battery packs as weight. If it comes out correctly it will look like this,

Once I was happy with the left panel ,I used the left panel as a templet for the right side.Next I sanded the panles together and your happy lay them on your build board. My board is only 60" long I kept 70% on the board.I'm starting with the right panel. The first spar I did was the bottom (or closest to the trailing edge of the wing). This one is the shortest. This will help you set up your wing so you can keep it all straight.Lay the spar in place following the lines from the left panel.I instaled a couple ribs 11,10,5,&4.Then I measured from the back edge of the rib to the edge of the wing panel.I did this for both sides making sure there was the same distance. You can lay the spar against the lines on the left panel but over a distance things can wander. When your happy trace the spar onto the right panel, lift spar up add glue and reinstale.I also added weight to keep the spar down. The top spar(one closest the leading egde) is done in the same manor. At all times with adding spars I always would check distances between the two spars. Here's a pic for insperation,

Once I glued in all the ribs on the right panel and Aileron spar in place the wing was slid to the right. The left panel was put onto the board. Also sometimes I think I get smarter the more you get into a build This time I place wax paper under the panel so it dosen't get glued to the board.Since the wing is 80" in span and I don't have any spar material that long I made a splice in the upper spar.It is between ribs 4&5.I think this is called a "SCARF Joint".If that is not correct someone please correct me.Next I epoxied the joint together and glued spar to the bottom sheeting. After it was dry I put carbon fiber on the sides and across the top.I hope this will give some add strength.1/32 Plywood could also be used.

If you do a search, there is an old thread I ran across once that detailed how to beef up the Jetis. Basically you wrap the magnets with a single layer of Kevlar thread. You have to be careful and take your time not to overlap the kevlar strand as you wrap. There is just enough room between the magnet and the windings for one thin layer. Once its wrapped you wet out the layer with thin CA to bond it.
If I recall, you can rev the motor as much as the bearings will take.

Joshua,I'm finishing my Giant Mudduck at the moment,http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=773143 .The plane has had two successful flights and now the finish work is in progress. This should be done by the end of march or sooner. For me I really never get a chance to really finish a plane. This will be first in a line of many to come. Also this plane is my test bed for A123 Cells.Even though I flew it on Nimh. That's my story and I'm sticking to it :D Jan08 focal piont in the ama mag had a jalopaplane in it.
This will the next plane finished.

I haven't given up yet on this plane.9yrs in this hobby has caught up with me in the building area.Too much crap and nothing organized. So it was time for a 5s project(Simplify,Straighten,Scrub,Standardizing,Su stain)For some people staying neat and organized is easy. For me it is a challange.

"PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE!" I finally decided how I was going to control the rudder and elevator.I was looking at some elaborate system to control the eleavator with dual servos and making a pull pull for the rudder.I scrapped all those idea's.Tonight I made a 5/32 music wire joiner to connect both elevator halfs.I will use one servo. As for the rudder,I will make up another control horn out of g10 fiberglass sheet. The serov's will be in the tail area. This will provide my rear weight  . I'll post picture tommorro night,
