:D I just recieved Wendell Hosttetler's plan for the champ.
109" wing span, (1622 sq"), 12-15 lbs.
Ordered the following:
5330/18 Axi motor (outrunner)
(2) 4s 5000mah lipos (for a 8s set up)
22x10 Apc E prop
Have Castle 85 HV esc
Calculated current draw to be 70 to 75 amps full throttle.
The largest I have done so far is the Hanger 9 P-40, Astro 40 geared, 6s lipo,s. All I want to do with the Champ is to be able to pull a loop from level flight. I believe that it will fly well with half to three quarter throttle. I would like comments on this set up and/or suggestions. I have been told by Hobby lobby and Castle that the HV 85 may have to be reprogramed for the outrunner. Anyway I could use all the help I can get. Thankyou, Vj

Vj,
I ran the numbers on your setup through Motocalc and it looks like you could get better performance from a smaller prop, 18" will give similar thrust at slightly higher rpms and draw less than 48 amps at full throttle. Motocalc also mentions it would do consecutive loops from level flight with the 18' prop. Naturally the program only suggests what will happen and the final deciding factor is of course test flying. If you don't already own the "Castle Link" for the speed controller I suggest picking one up, it will make setting changes on the speed control much easier.
Are you going to cut the kit yourself or are you planning on using a kit cutter? Either way definitly start a build thread I would love to see one go together.

Pull a loop from level flight? that's better performance than the 1:1 champ!

Who's going to cut the kit for you? What will you cover it with?

I'd love to see this one get started.

ohh I love that plane, I hope you do the full thread on the building. I am using a similar setup on a 1/4 scale Piper Cub that I am working on. Using a 10s pack of A123 cells, similar voltage to your 8s pack of lipos, with the axi 5330-18, and an apc wide electric 19*12.. I get 1400 watts, 28volts at 50amps.. motor runs dead cold at this level. Your 22*10 should give you around 75amps as you calculated. And a lot of watts! :)

cooper998. Darn it. I sent you a reply e-mail instead of posting on this thread. Sorry.
TRP. I was going to cut the kit myself but I may use a kit cutter. Covering ? Looking at Mono or ultra.
hermperez. Will drop prop size to start with. 70 amps at about 1500 watts seems like over kill to me. Vj

I used Nelson LiteFab on my Electric powered Super CUb - I love the way it looks and it was SOOO easy to work with. You can purchase it in 30' rolls which is great.

I built a Bud Nosen Champ back in the 80s powered by a Quadra and covered it with Coverite for the texture.
Right now I'm gathering all the parts and studying the plans. Checked a kit cutter and the price ( $385) blew me away. Will have to it the hard way. Vj

it is not that hard, get yourself a small bandsaw and a large pile of balsa wood, a couple of hours later you have a kit.

You can get a band saw for about 100.00 at Lowes, Home Depot, OSH, etc. The pile of wood for a plane this size is what?... mabye another hundred? Max? If you have the time- give it a go! I'd love to watch the progress. Maybe cut enough wood for two kits. Build one. Sell one to recoup the cost/time investment?

Hello Victor,
A 109" wingspan? Good gosh, that's not too much smaller than the one I soloed in many years ago. Sure was a fun airplane, bet it'll be a great model!

Yes it's large. So far I purchased a balsa lumber yard. The building is coming along. I have issues with my computer & digital camera so I used a 35mm camera & that didn't come out to swift. I will post later some of the construction pictures as poor as they are. Vj

Well I know this is a bad image but I'm just want to see if it works. Lots of sticks.

As a data point my CG Curtiss Hawk flies quite well at 14.5lb on 8S and a 5330/18 and APCE 20X10.

She is very sweet, that is either a very large plane or she is petite :)

i have the same motor combination in my 1/5 scale pt19. a 20x10 works very nice on. i tried both 22" and 18" props, but found this to be the best combination for my airframe. i guess the point to this, don't get to caught up in moto-calc. what matters is the prop that flies it the best. try a couple on your airframe.
