Hull finishing

[speedsport]

I have a 16" Catamaran hull. Built out of bulsa and foam. I was
wondering how to finish it? Should I use a resin or paint etc? I'm new
to boat building. But not new to RC. Any help would be great.

I recently built an electric foam/balsa catamaran myself. I
made 2 foam hulls joined by a balsa deck. I left the foam
uncovered and finished the whole thing with water-based
polyurethane. If I had it to do over, I would have used
resin and fiberglass cloth. Without it, the foam dents and
mars easily. If you skin over all surfaces of the foam
with balsa, then the dent resistance of the resin and glass
cloth might not be needed. I would still use the water
based polyurethane, however. Even if you use a foam sealant
coating followed by any finish that can "eat" the foam, even
the tiniest crack will allow it to penetrate and destroy the
foam.

A lot of the plane guys building foam aircraft use a product called
Cabots Crystal Clear mixed 50/50 with window cleaner. It is a great
sealant and will not attack the foam and whats more is a lot lighter
than putting it on normal thickness.

I am currently building a couple of balsa monos and sealing them using
really light fibreglass cloth 1/2oz and a product from Bunnings called
Glass Coat which is an epoxy resin that I thin down with metho. Works
a treat too!!!!
