Reading the thread on the failed magazine, I downloaded the plans for the tug Mariner as I thought It might make a good boat to put the engine in. I'm mucking around with an overhead projector to get an appropriate size and have come up with 50 x 11 inches. Is this too Big.
Also the size of the boiler, would a 3.5 inch drum with 1.5 inch flametube and overall length of say 6 inches be appropriate for this engine.

I have seen the TRV1 and I think the size is a bit big, I would think 38-40 inches would be better. If you use a Poker burner you could have the flue down to 3/4-1 inch increasing the water capacity.

Thanks

Hi Nick
The plans say 1/24 scale but of what length boat?
Do you know where one could buy a minivap? I was thinking of making a smaller size tug and putting one of them in it.

Hi Don and Steve,
Don, I dont know the length of the origional boat, the plans are a little sketchy. I printed the plan onto an overhead transparency and used a projector to enlarge the plan onto a wall, taped the paper to the wall and started tracing.
I overlayed the engine on the image and increased the size until the engine fitted below the deck, this also gave me the size of boiler i can fit 4" max, I have some 3 1/2 tube so that works.
I origionaly made a 40 inch boat for this engine and it ended up too small although it was a longer launch style hull.

Whats a minivap, I looked it up on google and only came up with humidifing equipment etc.

Looked at the asp site, very nice, the larger engine has a 11 x 11 mm bore and stroke and they sugest it will drive a hull 50 inches long 70mm prop, so my gage tvr1a with a 12.7 stroke and 15mm bore should be more than adequate and its a slide valve which I inderstand to be more efficient and powerful than an occillater as well.

just got to finish my Kingfisher, redo the deck on my IOM, make a deck for my Marblehead and finish it, put a motor in my round nose hydro, finish my Lulonga tug and start on my Larke IOM. Do you think I have too many projects?
