I need some advice on a tow hook location on this model. It is intended for slope but Dave assured me that it would thermal. It has a Clark Y and I believe it will. Trouble is, I'm not sure how far forward of the Cg to put the tow hook. WS is approx 70" with 690 sq in. It is listed at 3 to 3 1/2 lbs but I used contest balsa on alot of it and will come in well under that. Anyone have an idea for the hook?

The easiest way to locate the tow hook is to mark your c/g at the wing/fuselage union then use a protractor to project a line 12 to 20 degrees forward from the c/g. where that line crosses the bottom of the plane is where to locate the tow hook. The greater the angle the more shallow the launch. You could locate the tow hook as much as 1/4 inch "behind" the c/g, but launches would be on the squirley side with a constant danger of a pop off.

Using this method makes the verticle thickness of the fuselage irrelevant, you are determining the launch angle of the plane relative to the pull of the high start. So if you set the hook at 15 degrees ahead of the cg then the launch angle of the plane will be 75 degrees from the pull of the high start. ( this is totaly disregarding trim and control input)

werks fer me!!!

Thanks Vince. I got ahold of Dave Sanders and he told me 10 deg forward of the CG. This worked out to 1 inch ahead. Sounds like 12-20 deg would work too. Appreciate the info. Thanks again.
