This is something you need to workout depending on your printer and the
software you use. What works for one person may not work for others.
For me, I select page scaling in the print properties and large plans
are spread across many pages.

Whenever I get plans, whatever the size and scale, I take them to my local
printer and get copies made on vellum paper. I usually make two complete
sets. One set for looking at and measuring and one set for cutting up to
make templates, etc. as needed. The originals I keep in a tube, untouched.
The vellum is semi-transparent and takes much more abuse (spills, glue,
paint, etc.) and is much easier to clean off. As is often the case, I work
from several different sets of plans that may have been drawn to different
scales. I then have them blown-up or reduced to the scale at which I'm
working. Any print shop that does printing for architectural firms has the
kind of copiers you need. The plans can be printed up to 48" wide and
infinite length. This may seem like a big cost item, but in the context of
what a typical model will cost when done, the cost is trivial.

try selecting the poster option when printing if you have it. this can
make up multiples of a4 sheets 4, 9 or 16.
it worked for me.
