hi!
i am currently in the process of making the plans for a grandbanks type trawler motoryacht. now i want opinions on the scale size, i am currently thinking of either 1:14 or 1:16 scale, which will put the model size either 40" or 36".
now i will put either a single or twin drive on it, with a mini-ev motor/s and raboesch 3 blade 60mm prop.
i want my model to be either 2 or single prop/motor, so may i ask if a single drive can power a 40" model sufficiently or it should just be 36" and will a 36" model can handle twin prop setup?
thanks and i hope my questions are clear :D

1:14 = 40.5" x 13.5"
1:16 = 36.0" x 12.0"

my choice would be 1:16 as it is easier to scale out. That size and style of vessel you can go either way with power train options. Gear or belt drive on a single power source should be no problem.

I have two models in the 30-32" range with twin prop & rudder set ups. One is a scratchbuilt 80' Elco PT boat in 1:32 scale. The second one is a USCG Point class 82' WPB in 1:32 scale. In the PT, I have twin motors with counter rotating props running off a single ESC. In the WPB, I have two motors with counter rotating props and two separate ESC's. I have independent control of the ESC's with an Ace Nautical Commander radio. I also have a 52" long model of a 205" USN ATF/USCG WMEC that is powered by two motors geared to a single shaft.

thanks for the thoughts.
i will use the resources i have right now which are 2 raboesch props (60mm R and L), 2 johnson mini-ev motors, 6v - 8.4v sla and ni-mh batteries, and a futaba esc.
so my initial plan is make boat that will be powered by a single motor and prop using between 6v - 8.4v battery. and maybe later on if i will be able to buy another esc, convert this boat or maybe make another that can handle 2 props, 2 motors and 2 esc.
that is why my initial question is which is a better size to make that can handle either 1 or 2 motor-prop combo. will a 40" boat be underpowered if fitted with a single prop motor combo and 6v? motor is rated at 1500rpm/v i guess. and will be using direct drive setup.
picture is the boat i am desperately trying to make. :D

Sounds like it could ok to me up to 40"- what is your target weight? that might be a bigger issue...

Grandbanks Trawler is a nice, easygoing boat- (assuming you are doing the 'classic' version)

Do you have complete drawings? I believe taubmans has a GB trawler clone in their plans collection...

In my humble opinon, The larger model are better, since there easyer to see from shore. I suffer for old eye syndrome. If I had to choose between 1:16 or 1:14 scale I think I would choose 1:10, that double the size of 1:20. With larger models , the greater deatal can be added. So go large.
I stepping off my soup box now.

Or save yourself the trouble, and just get Amati's new Grand Banks in 1:20:

p.s.: Amati is distributed by Model Expo in the US, but I haven't seen this in their catalog yet. I have seen it listed on a European site somewhere...

Wow wow WOW Why did I click that link???? Those are awesome models. Guess I don't have to consider making a G.B. hull cause that guy has it nailed down perfect. Nice stuff. I wonder if he'll sell me some patinaed bronze hawse pipe surrounds. That is officially the job I want to have....9-5 playing boats (I'm guessing after the 10th hull you get bored though)

Those boats are amazing! I totally agree, that would be a great job/company to have- small shop, great product, etc...

After the first 100 or so, probably would eventually just get down to rote assembly work though...
:(

Ahhh, we can dream...

I want to be a bra fitter at Victoria's Secret...

Any ideas what one of those models would cost?... Going on the price of the chairs, perhaps $10 - 15K ???

Ahhh, decisions, decisions... ;)

I've cruised around that site and have no idea re $$$ - they certainly are pushing out the "if you have to ask..." 'image' though...

I'm very curious about the Amati kit though! that may be a bit closer to the range of possibility... :)
