Hi all, some great news for Phoenix pilots!!
New aircraft added:
Yak-54 (28%) 50cc petrol
High performance 3D IC airplane

Because of the huge surfaces and large throw I recommend -30 expo all round.
Enjoy

Is it just me or is the elevator trim off? I have no idea if it's supposed to be this way.

Hi, Seems fine this end!, Could you elaborate a bit??

It seems to pitch the plane up here also rather than full throttle straight line.
Do you guys use expo? I'm just trying to see what other people do. I actually fly slightly more twitchy than this without expo. What would I gain by adding expo?

It constantly climbs. I have to use quite a bit of elev. trim to flatten it out. None of the other models do this so I wasn't sure if was just a charachteristic of the Yak.
When starting out, it will immediately take off with just throttle application.

Hi Please see the pic for the fix ,
change the Stabilizer incidence to 1.3.
Many thanks

Yeh mine seems to climb and also roll slightly to the left. No trims are being used on the TX and all the other models seem fine.
But i mostly fly the Trex 600 :)

No probs, It seems that my calibration had drifted slightly from when i started the yak, After reading this i did a quick recalibration and found it was off a hair!.
Cheers guys for the quick feedback!,
This enables a quick fix!.

Hiya Jim,
How do I uninstall the original Yak before I install this new one? I don't see the option in PhoenixUpdate, and having a 'variant' with the new 1.3 stabilizer incidence is annoying so I'd like to install the new one over the top if this is possible...
Thanks,
Simon

Hi Simon,
Download the new Yak from the website
start phoenix and go to the update menu
and locate the new yak, select and install.
This will overwrite the old one.
Now got to C:\Program Files\PhoenixRC\variants\fixedWing
and delete any yak variants.
Hope this helps.

Another difference I've noticed with the new Yak compared to other models is it seems much more sensitive on landing. I do what looks to me like a nice 3 point landing, which Phoenix would consider fine with other models, and it resets. Similarly on takeoff, if I pull up a little early so that the main gear lifts off before the tail, it resets, whereas other models don't do that. Is this intentional? It's as if it's configured with an extra sensitive tail wheel.

Is this the standard that we are to expect from a £80 simulator? Ailerons that do not hinge properly?
Engines that don't sound realistic and which spool up immediatley and unrealisticly?
This sim may be good for helo's but I have yet to see much in the way of a physics improvement over AFPD and the graphics and environments are nowhere near as good as AFPD. The models look second rate and the clipping on the scenery's is atrocious.
Come on guys sort it out? AFPD is an old sim and it looks better and feels better for aircraft.
I was hopeing that Phoenix was the next big leap but it doesnt seem to be the case.
I'm pleased that I kept hold of my copy of AFPD so that I can swap between the two for helo and fixed wing.

I've noticed the ailerons look funny as well on some models when they move. Similarly on some models with large rudder throws, the rudder actually moves into the elevator at full throw. To me though these are just little details, in the same category as not having animated crashes with the aircraft breaking apart. They have no effect on flight dynamics; I only notice them if I taxi the aircraft over in front of me and specifically look at the control surfaces.

I find the engines spool up at a realistic speed. The only time the engine spools up immediately is when the simulator resets after a crash. Then the aircraft comes back online at whatever throttle setting your stick is currently at, rather than going through the whole spinup sequence. I believe this is an intentional feature of Phoenix, since the makers felt that it was annoying to users to have a really long reset sequence if you're practicing something where you're crashing a lot. If you want to go through the whole spinup time after each crash, just decrease the throttle when you crash, before the simulator resets, and it'll come back online at idle.

Hi, Ajenkins, if you find the yak to sensitive on take off just adjust the 'robust' setting in aircraft edit, change it to say 60, thatll make it tank like!.
Skunk, Please forward your concerns to support@phoenix-sim.com
As i have nothing to do with the 3D modeling IE ailerons.
Many thanks
Jim Lacey.

Hi all,
Just to let you know that the Yak ailerons
have had a rework tonight!. If you download
the yak again and re-install it over the top of the old one
you will see!!.

Hi Jim,
I don't want it to be like a tank, just realistic. I was just saying the Yak behaves differently from other airplanes in Phoenix in this regard. Sometimes I like to take off right into a hover, which usually involves dragging the tail a little on takeoff. The other 3D-capable aircraft in Phoenix will let me do that, but not the Yak. So I was wondering if the Yak was made more fragile like that on purpose or by accident. Never having flown a big RC plane like that in real life, I can imagine they may really be more fragile, but I think the Funtana and Pitts in Phoenix do let me do takeoffs into a hover, and they're around the same size.

I just downloaded the new Yak into Phoenix, and the problem I was complaining about is gone. I can now take off into a hover with the Yak no problem. Thanks.

Hi,
A question for Jim really..
I'm new to all this flying lark and am having immense fun learning how best to crash. The problem is that the options for which a/c i fly are a little limited as a pleb. Would it be possible to request some more basic models to learn with? i.e i have a 30 sized shuttle copter at home and the sim only has a 50 training model, this is going to be much more stable than my 30 so leading me into a false sense of security. On the plane front it'd be nice to have some middle ground between the low and high wing trainers and all the aerobatic stuff that is in there [i know this sim is geared up to improving peoples 3d stuff but learners are just as valid] that said, its an awesome sim and it's gonna get me sacked :) oh, i managed to take off fly and land the hawk the other night...... how realistic is that???
Cheers and sorry for hijacking the thread :)

Hi all,
So I was wondering if the Yak was made more fragile like that on purpose
Yes!, I did make the yak a little more fragile than the others,
maybe to fragile for some! As you said this is now fixed in the new download.
You can adjust the 'Robust' setting until you get the right feel for you.
In real life a tail dragger of that size should be taken off properly,
IE, Build up your speed until the tail is flying and off the ground, then add
more power and gently feed in elevator until the front wheels break free from the ground.
I have torn the Rudder clean of my funtana before doing a fast take off. :D
Hix,
Glad your having fun learning!!, Ref the 30 size heli, all i can say right now is wait a week or so its coming soon. (now i'm gonna get the sack with ya!!).
Ref the planes, Phoenix are adding aircraft all the time, if you have something in mind let me know.. Good job on the hawk, and it flys very realistically, the only difference in real life is the £2,500 worth of knee knocking you get!.

Jim,
bloody hell good response time.... are you sure you are a UK company? ;)
Excellent news on the 30 heli - cheers for that
RE: Planes, i reckoned something like a Tucano i saw 3 or so years ago in RCM&E that was EP and was balsa construction with solid balsa wings that were sanded to profile. i think span was in region of 46" but can't remember the rest. I reckoned this would be a pretty goos intermediate training machine??? What's anyone elses thoughts on that??
