OK, maybe this is whacked, but why couldn't you strap about 8 or 10 JetCat Titan's http://www.modellbau-usa.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=35 onto your back and arrange them in some fashion to produce enough balanced thrust to fly like the Bell Rocket Belt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1ggMgPWkzQ

After watching those 25 second flights I thought mini turbines might be another tact?... you'd have to be sure not to injest all the ground cover though!

Whadda ya think? Who needs wings?

i suppose that you could, but you would need to 1. buy the turbines ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$)

2. have enough turbines to give you enough thrust to take off with any authority

3. have to carry at least 10 lbs of fuel per minute of flight time you wanted

4. find someone crazy enough to test it

5. control it

interesting idea, but nothing new or really doable with normal peoples' funding

A long old thread. The web site for this guy no longer exists but it was some funny stuff. 8 turbines strapped to his back...

So is there any existing video to back up this guys claims?

As for building the contraption, even if you had even 10 turbines x 4K each that's $40,000 even if yo double that for all the related hardware and equipment it seems to me that it may cost less than the rocket belt and have sustainable flight times.

That is a lot of dough, but in comparison to other projects of this type it is probably nil?...

There was some video of him flailing around while tethered between two posts. He got maybe (big maybe) two inches off the ground before it knocked him off his feet. I think he gave up after that.

Hummm now flailing is not flying in my book! Still like to see the video if someone has a link.

If the dummy had put them on servo actuators tied to gyroscopic stabilized mixers (although that technology may have not been as available back then) it would have been controllable, although kind of bizarre. The energy density of the jet fuel is offset by have 8 turbine's worth of metal carrying around. the much better personal air vehicles use large span propellors to move that much air around. Much cheaper $$$$$ too!!

Hi Guys.
Yes the eight turbine effort was is a little half baked.
I dont see why four 50lb thrust turbines two each side would not be manageable they could be placed in a ceramic kevlar duct that may augment the thrust and provide some thermal / turbine failure protection for the pilot. As has been demonstrated, no guidence system/ gyros are nessesary the rocket /jet belts get around quite happliy with the the right cg of g and control inputs. Its not something I would fly very high off the ground but it would be fun to cruise around six feet up!
One day soon it will be done.
Regards Mark
Ps Anyone looking for a test pilot I weigh 73 kgs. :D

There ARE a couple people crazy enough to start trying this sort of thing. the first is here:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5417019303200331106

He strapped two turbines on his feet. He probably barely stays level in flight, but HERE is the one that gets me goin...

http://www.jet-man.com/index_eng.html
http://www.jet-man.com/actuel_eng.html

You'll see THIS guy is actually flying. Maintains level flight and uses his body to maneuver. He's currently working on a take-off and landing system.

Why multiple turbines? The company that made the engines for Burt Rutan's record setting aircraft could probably make something in the required power range to lift a man. With vectored thrust and gyro stabilation this dream is quite possible.

These are off the shelf model turbines. A custom made turbine would be big $$$$.

All you need is one F107 turbofan... Anybody know where one can get surplus cruise-missile parts?
