I'm getting ready to start a thunder tiger raptor 30. This is my first gas anything. Is there any harm to using a 5 cell rx pack vs a 4 cell rx pack? I read somewhere - someone cautioned that the gyro might complain.

Thanks for any advice.

what kind of gyro? Futaba gyros won't like it.

BTW, you should go here for alot of good stuff:

Gyros arent the issue its the 9254 but if you are just starting out a large capacity nicad 4 cell pack will be fine.

This is false. Futaba gyros are rated for 6V. It's the Futaba digital tail servos that don't like 6V.

What servos are you running? What gyro? Keep in mind that current draw will be higher with 6V than with 4.8V, so you'll need to charge your battery more often for safety.

The advantage of 6V is higher speed & torque from your servos.

The gyro will be fine, as will your receiver and probably your other servos too, but these guys are right, the 9254/9253/9251 don't like 6V at all. If you were running a regulated setup with LiIon, you get 6V neat but with 5cell NiCd or NiMh, you can get up to 8.5V output when fully charged! That 9254 won't take that for long at all. The problem seems to be that a very fast servo, especially one working as much as a tail servo, generates quite a bit of heat. At 6V, things just get too hot. Also, at 4.8v you get something like 0.08s/60degrees, so at 6.0V it'll be trying to move at 0.06s or something. The drive motor is obviously a hot wind, so no 6V!

Cheers
