Check over in the DIY motor forum.

You will need to rewind and remagnet it..but mos CDROM motors will get you about 50W of fairly efficient power..the flux ring and the stator is all you can use tho.

Of course now you can buy custom cans and endbells nad stators to make soe pretty heafty "CD-ROM" motors. But using the actual stuff that comes out ao CD-ROM, you are limited to small foamies pretty much.

Ya gotta build one or two.

They are a right of passage.

The main stopper for most cd-Rom conversions is getting the old magnet ring out of the can. If it is the rubbery fridge magnet type...no problem. If it looks like quartz, or is hard as a rock, you can try to soak it in acetone and chip it out. I have had more luck with a torch once that fails. If all that leaves you with a bent can, you will start to wonder why you dont just pay $1.00 for a new can, since you gotta buy the magnets.
I would set aside the cd motor, and order a 11 buck GBv1.1 kit from go brushless, and a set of mags for the one you yanked from the cd. I would also add a motor mount or tube.

You can't do much without rewinding, so the kits look better and better, but one of my best DIY's was removed from a dumpster :D .

My take is that Single stator CD-Roms are good for :

light balsa profile 3d 30" span range and under.
36" foamys and under.
30" speed flying wings and under. (10 turns and less=easy and very fast)
40" slo-fly flying wings and under.

The gobrushless database will give you a good idea of thrust and pich speed ranges you can achieve.

It is a great stepping stone to winding the right motor for the job, or being able to rewind for a different job.

I will say that I only go for the 24mm stator's when it comes to the conversions. Most of these come from Toshiba/TEAC drives. They are always painted green with no plastic wire protectors.

One thread that might help convince you uses a GBx double kit:

For 30 bucks, it's a very easy/fast to wind motor that will knock your socks off.

Are you convenced yet?
