I came across these on www.tugspotters.com - a great site for us tuggies, if you haven't already discovered it! :)

These photos are by Frank Berting. I'm sure he wouldn't mind sharing them.

Just give us the url to the website.

It looks like the model tug (model, yeah lol!!) is pulling the full size tug?

Looks like a 1/4 scale(3"=1'-0") test for a "deck mounted carousel-ring.
As I recall, the original carousel tug had the ring mounted half a deck up and mounted vertically around the pilot house like a collar.

The original Carousel Tug performed similarly during a sideways pull.
I would imagine they are attempting to lower the CG of the towing point.
Seems like they are proud that it can tow 360 degrees, and that the list put on the vessel is acceptable. Personally, I would prefer a water tight cabin mounted on a vertical gimble, so that the pilot house would stay level regardless of the list incurred during a tow. :p

Kmot, I'm not sure that the big boat is a tug. Notice the large workdeck forward?
It might be some kind of supply vessel or transport.

Go to Umi message above, click on the "news" link, go to downloads, download video DOT systems and that should take you to the link. The model says it is 1:8,5 scale. Jerry J

I believe this is a shore to ship river supply vessel and I believe this one supplies drinking water (pomplebed might know for sure Jan?). This is a small one, they can be very large, usely powered by one engine. They carry from sand (construction, landfill) to liquid gas and are quite deep.

Hi Pkboo,

Ghost suspected it to be a waterways barge of some sort, as you said. Somewhere in my plans files I have an old MAP drawing of a motor vessel that is similar, used as a transport on the Euro canal system.

I'm sure you must be right. Interesting though, how it has tires all around it like a typical tug. Maybe because it is a supply ship and has to rub sides against whatever ship it is supplying?

kmot, using tyres as fenders is common practice in Europe for inland waterways craft

Kmot, Ghost is right! And you can see how deep it lies in the water giving her away as a supply ship, almost full I'ld say.

Well I got lucky! It is a waterboat, and the owner is member of the inland shipping union (here it's more like a club!), follow this link: http://www.debinnenvaart.nl/schependb/foto.php?id=2158&plaatje=D.W.B%20Dordrecht.jpg&naam1=DWB%20DORDRECHT&naam2=DWB%20Dordrecht&jaar=1989&type=Waterboot&werf=Matena%20Gebr.%20in%20Papendrecht

Additional info: The municipality of Dordrecht is the latest owner and observe how deep it is!

Uh oh, I just stumbled on a site you' all would really be interested in, I think! It has if I've to believe the homepage 5401 ships registered, no plans as far I can see!

Thanks, pkboo.

I visited the site, and checked the dimensions. The depth of hull is interesting, but more so, the beam. In the image with the little tug, it looks to be fully loaded.

Hi Pkboo,

I have yet to start a thread. What would you like to see?

Hi Pkboo,

I have yet to start a thread. What would you like to see?

Oh, I don't know, I love building boats yet I have conflicting interests, e.g. my PT is as original as it could be with three props, working lights, etc. yet I want it to fly :D . I have to say that I've become more critical of myself since I joined this forum. I've stripped my only working boat (the PT.... again!) to make it more original (colors, 20mm oerlikon, markings, etc.). I even went so far in detailing the dashboard which formelrly only had a decal representing the dash (I saw that in a thread!) and stuff like that! So if you want me to chose something it has to be fast, as original to the real one and something to do with WWII! :)
