View Full Version : Discussion FMS/SmartPropoPlus/EasyStar/DX7

How do I map the sticks on a DX7 to FMS for an EasyStar model? Specifically, in FMS terms, which ‘channels’ map to the following controls:

Left stick: up/down
Left stick: right/left
Right stick: up/down
Right stick: right/left

My radio is connected via a 3.5mm plug to the mic input on a windoze box. I’m using FMS with SmartPropoPlus and assigning the controls through the Mapping/Calibration menu.

The config on my 'real' easy star is:

Wires: Receiver Ports
------ ------------------
ESC: THRO
Rudder: AILE
Elevator: ELEV

I’d like to map my FMS controls precisely (if there is such a thing) to my real-life plane. What's the secret? If this has already been discussed on 10 other threads, please just point me in the right direction.

Thanks. :o

Nice picture. That reminds me that I should probably point out that I bought the heli version of the DX7, with the understanding that I could configure the box to work with both aircraft and helicopter models.

Could that be a factor?

The usual rule is the primary turning surface is on the right stick (Mode II). So a three ch. E* has only throttle on the left stick.

Just look at the blue bars when you are calibrating. The bar that moves when you move the stick you use for throttle is the channel number you put against throttle on the left hand side of the calibration screen.....and so on for the other controls.

I'd guess that it will be Throttle - Ch1, Rudder - Ch2, Elevator - Ch3 because that's the standard for JR which is what the DX6 is based on.

I suspect that there might be a linking problem between my DX7 and the computer.

When I go into the FMS Mapping/Calibration menu, all of the sticks appear to excite the channel 2 bar and partially some of the other bars, which doesn’t look right to me. So it may be that FMS is not getting a distinctive signal (audio tone?) from each control on the box.

I suspect you have a polarity problem or some of your mixers are on. To solve the former problem, un-check the Auto-detect check-box and try both positive and negative.

I'll try this tonight and report back. Thanks.

Make sure you have it in FM/PPM mode not PCM.

Zargon, I don't think this particular Tx has modes. It is, AFAIK, a PPM modulated with spread spectrum technology.
This means that SPP has to be set to PPM(Generic).

Here's the answer...

DX7 off, but activated by connecting the DX7 trainer port to the mic port of 'puter via a 3.5mm audio cable.

SmartProPlus Console:
- PPM(generic)
- Shift Polarity (auto-detect unchecked and positive)
- Audio Source: Enabled/Microphone

FMS settings:
- Control: Joystick

Mapping/Calibation:
- Rudder: 2 (not used on the EZ star)
- Elevator: 4
- Aileron: 1
- Throttle: 3 Inv

Thanks very much to all, particularly Zaragon and shaul_ei, for the info!

Mapping/Calibation:
- Rudder: 2: Inv (who cares?)
- Elevator: 4: Inv
- Aileron: 1: INV
- Throttle: 3 Inv

If you want to start playing with the helis copy the mapping into the lower four settings as well.
At that point:
- Rudder: 2: Inv (who cares?) is the tail and you will care quite a bit :D

Of course, I was referring to the Easy Star. On four-channel airplane models, you'd also care about the rudder.

GoLikeaFish, I wish ya luck getting connected, I know how frustrating it can get. I'm sure you'll make it! Just a quick tip prob everyone but me knows. I installed the ES model on FMS and the plane wouldn't fly off the runway. Just sat there and buzzed. Throttle worked, but no fly. Figured I had incompatible versions of ES and FMS. Well, I screwed around for a couple hours loading and unloading various combinations of both. NO LUCK. Then, sitting there staring at the screen, a light came on, ES got no wheels!! Hmmm,
remembered seeing "Hand Launch" somewhere..... Well, I'm sure everyone else knows thats all it took!! Anyway, didn't want ya to go thru that when ya finally get yer cable working. BTW, ES flies really smooth on FMS. I'm using a PC gamepad (Saitek P990 Dual Analog from Circuit City $20) plugged into USB. I've got a Hitec Neon SS 3 ch on the way. Anyone have a hack so I don't have to pay $20 for the buddy port kit. It looks like just a DIN socket and a connector. Only paid $30 for Tx on Ebay. BTW, Anyone out there know how to make any of the gazzion buttons on a game pad work instead of the keyboard?

I have everything working now on FMS. Regarding the hand launch, I guess it helped to start out using the keyboard before I received my radio:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6437921&postcount=30

Also, after setting up my REAL plane this weekend, I discovered that the Elevator and Aileron should be reversed, which means these controls need to be 'REV' on your radio and 'INV' needs to be unchecked in the FMS Mapping/Calibation menu.

I've edited my original post to correct this error.

Part with $10 or less and treat yourself to a USB interface - less hassle and you'll probably get something that works and won't risk damaging your soundcard
