Im getting my nice new T-rex to go fly at my local field, but theres a large irrigation pond right off the runway that has swallowed its fair share of planes and helis. Anybody have any ideas for some sort of flotation system that would keep the heli afloat, even if not dry? i was thinking airbag, but that might be too heavy, as id like to keep it under 150g (a lot less if possible) so i can keep my performance. any ideas or things poeple have done?

Maybe a set of foam pontoons for the landing gear might do the trick? I saw someone use a long balloon (I think it was sheeps-skin, lol) on a lama v2 one time

i was thinking that, but id like to keep it lighter. i was actually thinking of making a small bouy with a long piece of wound up fishing line that will detach when i crash, allowing me to recover my heli from the bottom of the lake. might be easier and lighter

hmmmm.... They make those little foam keychains for jetski keys. That may work for you for an out of the box solution. Tie it to a box of dental floss? How deep is that pond?

its 30 feet deep in places, and has claimed its share of expensive 90 sized helis. funny enough, a friend of mine and i were thinking of making a tethered submarine to go search for stuff (maybe even pick it up if we felt like making a claw) im starting to think arrowhead water bottle rubber banded to the skids...

Hey now! Now there is a great idea, even if it got wet you would only need to deal with water damage.
Submarine, nah, go get some diving equipment! Free heli parts!

oh yah, weve thought of that. one day i just wanna get a fishfinder and expand my fleet by 4 helis. what would be even better: make the helicopter a submarine! just get a 2 liter bottle, cut holes for linkages, attach orings, voila!

Where is this gravity heavy pond located? I have access to submersibles used for search and rescue, and this could prove to be an excellent training exercise for the team, if you're close enough to their home base. Likewise, you could contact your local police or fire dept and find out if they have a waterborne search team. If they do, give them a nice donation and see if they want to use the pond for grid and pattern search training.

good sentiment, but im in california, so i doubt youd want to lug a submarine out here for a 30 ft deep lake that is maybe the size of half a soccer field

What about those inflatable plastic ''banging'' tube you get for free at the basket ball games. They make inflatable Heli floats do you just not want to spend money. Ps i would go swimming if there where any Nitro helis down there . I honestly would be would it to me. i am 16 and i have almost completed my scuba surtification....
