View Full Version : Question Using a JRQuattro for Head Tracking?

Okay, I've got a question...

I'd like to jump into this Head Tracking FPV stuff, but at the moment it looks like the 'ready to fly' systems only work with Futaba radios with trainer channel selectivity. I've never used the trainer function and have no idea how it works.

I've currently got two JR radios - an 8103 with synth module and a Quattro.

I'd like to buy the 1000mw camera and TX/RX setup from Future Hobbies along with their 8dbi patch antennas to handle the video transmission and reception. I'll use a camcorder for recording.

I will be buying some sort of goggles, preferably with head tracking already installed (maybe from rc-tech?)

And here's where I need your help... Can I use the Quattro (CH44) to relay the goggles' movements (through that trainer port on its back) to a second receiver on the plane in order to control the panning/tilting of the camera? I would be using the 8103 set to a different frequency, of course, to fly the plane using the primary receiver and servos.

Do you think this idea would work? I'm hoping it will, since I've already got this other radio laying around and wouldn't have to spring for a whole new futaba setup.

Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I have two JR radios (8103 and 9303) and I believe your concept will work, as long as you don't mind coping with the additional tx. I think you might want to send a PM to AnthonyRC before making any purchase. He may have just what you need at a cost that is less than RC-Tech. I believe his unit can possibly be used with a JR plug versus a Futaba plug. The only difference (to you) will be that you are using a second tx/rx pair to control the pan/tilt, while the Futaba 9c users will be using a single tx/rx pair for flight control as well as pan/tilt control.

Thanks ob1, I'll try to get in touch with AnthonyRC. I've been reading his posts and following along with his developments of the gyro setup. Thanks Again,

It looks like the Quattro might work, as a dedicated headtracking uplink.
The trainer jack appears to be a 3.5mm mono Jack, with the same pinout as the high-end JR systems (signal on tip).

I don't have access to one of these transmitters to confirm this, but I'm sure we could work out a test somehow.

Hi Anthony,

Thanks for the info. I'm sure that you're very busy right now, so I'll understand if you don't have the time to confirm this, but if I can help out in any way, please let me know. Could you use pictures to confirm, or measurements, perhaps?

If it's usable, would you be able to build me a headtracker with the correct cable end?

Again, thanks for the help!
