What does it take to run a boat on the model boat basin in Mission bay? I have an old Air boat that I got running and would like to see it go again. Its glow powered. I do have AMA if that helps? Do you have to join a club or reserve a time with the park? Or can I just run it if no one else is on the water?
Thanks Ray

Hi Ray,
If this is the pond outside of San Diego, I attended a couple of regattas there in the early 1990's. I believe the property is owned by the Princess Resort Hotel, at which I stayed at that time, and is not under the control of any club that I know of. Be aware that it is a salt water pond---.

Ray -- I haven't been at the San Diego pond since 2001, but at that time, it had shared use with several clubs (Scale, sailing and powerboat racing) who mainly ran on weekends.
I know the racing club included gas-powered boats, so I don't believe there is a prohibition on gas. My former father-in-law and I ran an electric Midwest "Bass Boat" and the Midwest Tug some evenings and I also did sea trials for my Midwest Trawler there. I guess the main rule is to respect other people who might be running boats, whether R/C or not, and to check frequencies of those who might be running an R/C boat so you don't cause any glitches or get any in return. Courtesy is always a good idea.

Where is the pond relative to the San Diego Silent Flyers field?

It is on Vacation island probably about a mile from the field. Ran boats there in the early eighties when stationed at the FASWTRACENPAC.
Thanks

Thanks for the info.
I found this info:
http://www.sandiego.gov/park-and-recreation/parks/missionbay/facilities1.shtml
and this club:
http://www.sandiegoargonauts.com/page3.html
Looks like it is open to the public. I'll check with the club to see if there is an event planned for when I go.
A few years ago I stumbled up on the pond while going to a wedding at the resort. Some guys were running sail boats which looked like a good time. I have been buy a few times and rarely see any one on the water.

Thanks. I wish I had known about it when I was out there.

Well I spent a couple hours at the model boat basin running my old Airboat. The engine would transition very well from Idle so I had to run it rich but it ran along nicely. I thing I ran 4 tanks through it and had to stop cause water got to my rudder servo.
When I arrived there was one guy there with an electric Aircraft Carrier and a sail boat. He told me the week is broken up so Power runs one day, sail another and electric on another. I forgot the exact details, but again he said is no one if there you can run what you got.
A couple other guys came by later, one with a big Miss Bud Weedwacker motored boat that really moved out. He also cofirmed the various days of the week.
All the boaters I talked to were very cordial and seem pretty cool about things.

Hi Rock,
This is good news. Of all the sites that I've run on, this one is one of the best places, as far as scenery, access, parking, launchability, facilities, etc. It's good to hear that it is still available and actively used.
Not to mention that it's always temperate there. Where I live, it's kinda crappy outside now---.
