View Full Version : Discussion Sig Riser - Vertical Stab Flex.

After getting the servos installed on my sig riser build, I noticed there is a slight flexing action (about 1/16 of an inch)in the vertical stabiliser when I move the rudder from left to right. It appears that the rear part of the rudder flexes slightly to the direction the rudder is being moved. I'm using the supplied sig hinges that came with the kit and am using three to connect the rudder to the stab.
Will this flexing action affect perfomance if I leave it as is, or should I try to correct the problem?

It sounds to me like your hinges aren't lined up, and the top hinge is slightly aft of a line through the other two.

If that's the case, you're putting a little more load on the servo than you need to, and that'e going to put more load on the battery. I doubt you'll see any other effect on performance.

Fixing it is probably going to be a pain, though. Can you post a picture of the fin/rudder so we can see what's involved? I don't remember what kind of hinges are used in the Riser.

The sig hinges are just little square pieces of "indestrctable" material. This is the first time I have ever used hinges on any sailplan, generall, I use a strip of monocote for a hinge or packing tape. But I thought I would give it a try. Guess I should have stuck to old hat.

You can still cut the hinges and use hinge tape if you choose.
