I have a 1/144th Bismarck. The model is 69in.long and 10in at the beam. Its ready for the water weight is around 40lbs.I have two 550sized motors that are geared 2:1,turning 1.5in props.Im using 6volt,10amp/hr batteries.I tried to use a blue case Proboat esc and it kept shutting off.Question, can someone suggest a fairly inexpensive speed control that will handle both motors?I thought about using two proboat esc,but I dont want to buy another one just to find out it wont work.Is there a good one for my application for under $100?? Thanks for any advice.
Ps In case you were wondering, before I tried the Proboat esc,I had a simple full forward/full astern switch for a "esc"

Tim, there are several "550 size" motors and they all have different voltage requirements and draw different amounts of current. Can you be more specific about what is the exact motor you have?

I would highly recommend the Vantec RET411 series of ESCs http://www.vantec.com/ret.htm
They have high AMP and voltage tolerances so they are just a little tougher. I run twin MACK 5045 with four 45MM 5 blade props. I have had zero problems with this ESC.
Its about $80, but you get what you pay for, this is not a $25 ESC that is really intended for a 7.2V car.

you could run the two motors off independent esc's running through a y-lead onto the rx :)
those blue pro boats are 50A rated :) should cole with two 550s, have ya tried using 545's?

Tim,
I thought that you might have seen another post where there was a bad run of Proboat ESC's. I can't remember where the post was though. ProBoat was exchanging them out at no charge.

As quoted by frankg "The folks at HORIZON hobbies said that they did have trouble with with a batch or two with the speed control cutting out as you say yours does. They will exchange the speed control if it is not burnt out." It was in this thread http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=594758

The one in my Najade speed boat drives a 700/12 motor running on 9,6v, gets hot but excellent, when it failed it was replaced with another one :)

Maybe Ill try to exchange my Proboat esc at the nearest hobby shop and see if a new one works better.I havent checked the current draw on the motors, but I think its fairly high. This is because the shafts have a little friction with the stuffing tubes.I've taken the shafts out and cleaned the tubes out and relubed everything, but theres still a little drag.I'll keep my fingers crossed that the new esc will do the trick.
