I'm relatively new at R/C but a retired EE prof, so I can solder. Where can I find a replacement connector for a HS 55 servo so that I can shorten the cable? Thanks.

Maxx products has everything you will need:

If all you want to do is shorten the cable, why not just open the servo up and do it there? Not too hard with an HS55.

Hanson Hobbies (http://www.hansenhobbies.com/) also carries a complete line of pins, housings, wire and crimp tools. Prices are very competitive.
Perhaps not as satisfying, but you could just cut out the unwanted wire and splice with a little heatshrink covering.

These connectors are designed to be crimped. Whilst soldering could be done you would still be left with the uncrimped sticking up bits and no grip on the wire insulation. Crimping tools are a bit expensive for a one off job unfortunately. If you have a local avionics workshop or precision electrical instrument repairer you might get some help there. However if you plan to do a few connectors then you should seriously consider a suitable crimping tool.

Hi sinistral,
Now that's a scary thought, an academic, and an engineer with a soldering iron
ONLY kidding :)
Seriously, a good way to do it, is to cut out the excess wire and do a neat in line splice. I believe the HS-55s are a bit small to attempt soldering a shortened cable to the pc board, I'll have to take a look at one sitting on the shelf.
Now if it were a standard size Hitec, soldering a new servo cable to the solder pads on the pc board is "so easy a Ludite can do it" I don't know about a caveman though
Regards,
Pete
