....anyone know if there are still parts available for these? Or anything
else about these cars? Or should I just keep the motor and radio gear and
get a new kit?

Just got the thing out of the loft for the first time in donkey's years and
now find the chassis is cracked.

It's the kinda thing these days that really, you're only gonna wanna keep it
for nostalgia purposes. Parts can be found (eBay a good bet, RC forums etc)
but really, if you wanna get back into the hobby you wanna consider getting
a new kit.

Just for fun, it may be worth restoring and just keeping as a shelf queen...

My thoughts exactly. My first hobby-grade RC was a Kyosho Shadow; had it
back when I was a kid. I bought one this summer off E-Bay for $75, cleaned
it up, drove it twice and put it back in it's box (original!). I take it
down every now and then to look at it and putter around my garage with it,
but seeing as how parts availability is nil I don't wanna break it!

Guys, thanks for your replies (and apologies for taking so long to reply
myself.)

I think I've found a source for parts so the car may ride a while longer,
although, from reading your fascinating (and often incomprehensible - to
me - posts - what's a RDL CVD when it's at home?) it seems to me that I
really don't use the car anything like you guys use yours.

Can I just ask one more question - charging times... I bought a couple of
3300mah Nimhs and a "fast" charger which takes something like 5 or 6 hours
to charge each one. Back in the olden days I remember having a fast charger
that could do an 1800mah Nicad in something like 20 mins. Was that a rotten
way to charge, or is there a quicker way of charging these new beasts? I
mean, obviously they hold more power so I'd expect them to take, say, twice
as long, but not as long as they do...

Yea you can get fast chargers still, the one that comes with the Revo for
example charges the hump pack/7.2v sticks in about a half hour. I don't
know much about leccy RC stuff though so I'll let someone else recommend
brands and the like :-) An RDL CVD is basically a drive shaft.

Indeed. CVD = constant velocity driveaxle or constant velocity driveshaft.
Basically a shaft with a dogbone on one end and a u-joint on the other. Not
nearly as fancy as a 1:1 CV joint

They're 1/5th, petrol powered (not nitro) and £600ukp ;-) They go wellish,
but to be honest, I'm not a fan of the 1/5th petrol stuff. A well tuned
good nitro is quicker in my experience anyway... The Baja is by all
accounts much stronger than the offerings from FG.

I agree with Dan about the strength over the FG and various other 1/5 and
1/6 scale buggies.

I know a lot of people that have the HPI Baja 5B and most of them have spent
way to much money upgrading them with the 30cc motors and tuned pipes and
they still cant take a jump, let alone land one. Their to big to race even
on a lot of the 1/8 tracks here because if the jumps don't kill them then
the straights aren't long enough to get them up to speed.

They do look spectacular and go great on the beach or in the sand dunes.

I haven't heard too much about them. Too big and slow IMO. Take a look at
the HPI Savage, or any other 1/8th scale monster, buggy or truggy. Half the
price of the Baja 5B, more durable and quicker as well.
