I have an old plane that was from a old I think Great Planes kit. Something like the Viper or whatever. Anyhow, so I dont want to race with it, but I want to cook out some real speed. I have been talking to some club members, and one guy told me, with a .46 o.s ax, and a dubb jett tuned pipe, I should be able to kick out alot of rpms. What od you guys think? Also, what size of prop would be best for this?

We use the 46 AX in our series of racing.

It is not a RPM motor, it makes it's best power around 14,000 RPM with a APC 10x7.

the design of the engine takes in to account more modern thinking of noise control.

I'd be curious to get a new 55 AX and go for a killer pitch and see what it does

If you really want speed, get a Jett or a Nelson, that will give you 160 MPH +

Splatt, you mean a Dub Jett Engine, or the pipe? Btw, where is Richfield? I got to Glenwood Minnesota for family reunion every year, about 2 miles west of Alexandria.

Yes I did mean the whole engine,

For your first racing type engine I'd recommend a Nelson. There easier to tune. 350 bucks

Jetts may be faster but they take practice to get it right.

Richfield is a suburb of Mpls./St. paul on the west side.

If you go hit RCuniverse.com and go to there pylon racing area in Q500 you'll find a post by me showing a helmet cam view of our racing action.

It will give you an idea of the speed involved

I duct taped a camera to my helmet and raced. kinda fun to watch

In the Q40 area I have a link for Q40 racing too

My home club is grassfieldrc.org and our racing org is ncplracing.org

If you already have a 46 AX perhaps the most bang for the buck would be to get a Tower 46 muffler for 20 some bucks. That will give it a little more kick

Splatt, dont have the engine yet, but this thing isn't ment for racing, just real fast buzzes past the field etc etc. More sport flying with a real fast aircraft. I dont want to spend 350 bucks for a .46 motor! And, are you sure that some tower hobbies muffler would be better then a Dub Jett tuned pipe?

With that video, all I can say is WOW! I would lose your plane for a split second, then see it race by! I bet you can get a real crick in your neck from having to follow those. But that seems faster then 160 mph. Think about your field length, and then do a full speed pass, I mean those must be going faster then that.

If you saw the video on youtube than that was somewhere between 170 - 175 MPH's. Those are q40 's, spinning a 7.4x.8 APC carbon fiber prop 23,000 RPM. We fly those on a 608 ft course.

Trouble with these is you need a great deal of room to land, airports work nicely

My helmet cam vid on RCU is a with a stock OS 46AX with a 10x7 APC, those are going about 120 Mph's or so. A Viper or a Pred would be as fast.
the course is 475 long by 100 ft. wide. About 6-7 second lap times.

A quickie is a easy speed plane to deal wiith. the low wing loading makes landing a snap. Lands like a trainer.

The Viper and the Pred do have smaller ailirons to make them respond correctly at speed. On landing you lose the roll effect sooner, have it lined up on you final.

Set up the tail feathers to travel with only 1/3 as much down as up (less down). It makes it a smoother model

As far as mufflers go,there is a great deal of converstation as far as the Tower muffler deal goes. It's just a bigger can. I've got one, yes's a bit faster, yes it's a bit louder too

20 bucks, shipped for 700-800 more R's versus mayyybe a bit more for 60-70 bucks.

if you have not purchased an engine yet you might consider a Thunder Tiger 40 or 46. cheap, cheap, cheap. fast, fast, fast.

Or experiment, get the 55 AX , 155 bucks from tower.

So you dont think that putting a Dubb Jett muffler on an O.s 46 would make much difference? Thats my initial plan, but I dunno. Ill take a look at your video again. Thats pretty dang fast, I mean 120, with a standard 46

I ended up going with the 46 ax. Hopefully its enough power, but judging as how I had to cut out the motor mount, and how the pervious owner said it screams, it can't be any slower then what he claims so I guess we'll put her to the test. Not sure if it would be wise to break it in with or without the new muffler, because I would like to upgrade it, but for now im going to take it to the field this weekend(weather permitting) and try it out!

Ran it in today, did pretty dang good. Only died on me twice, it wasn't sucking fuel up at first for some reason, but after shooting some directly into the carb, it ran right up, went to a tank at 3 1/2 turns from complete rich, so ill take her to the field tomorrow, lean it out, and give it a shot!
