That is quite an impressive looking bird .... does the FSW fly in airplane mode as I have never seen a model FSW fly with that much forward in the wings.
The roll problem as I see it is always going to be there for this bird ... the two front fans are to close to gether to provide any roll augmentation .
The bleed off of an electric is just not going to work as they barely make any thrust in conventional config and then you are bending it down also . I am not that into fans but have read other boards where guys have tried this and found it was to much for the fans. Now if you dedicate two smaller fans to run pressure to the wingtips you might have roll control again ..but you also raise the wieght.
I use to have a vid of Eric Dainties nitro harrier doing the transition on my web site ( might have the copy on disc some where too ) and even with as much power as he had with an 80 ducted fan nitro ,, it barely did it and was carring only enough fuel to do one flight around and back down and then it was kind of a hard landing .
Batteries have come along way ,,but I don't think the fans have.
Wish I could help you more
Best of luck on this project and keep us all posted
Larry

Send the vid to me by email and I will put it up on another site that may allow the size you have .At least I am guessing that is the problem .

v22chap aka larry,
sent you the vids. i had to cut and chop to reduce file size and run time.....so quality is a bit lacking. let me know where those vids get posted.
thanks for the help

js...
you asked for gyro help...what type of help are you looking for...i am decently familiar with the gy401...
i would need to see behaviro you are experiencing before providing any insight iw ould imagine...let me know...i am really intrigued by your projfect.

It looks like you are using only vane control for pitch augmentation??? If so it looks like the movement was to fast / and to far to start out with and then couldn't get back to down in time to keep it afloat.
Also , once you take it off the test fixture ,,the backward moving vane is going to push the aircraft forward ... the vane has to stay positioned down and maybe vary the RPM of the fan for pitch and altitude control.
You may have that as I look at so many projects I tend to get them mixed together.
But it looks like you have good lift even with directing the airflow 90 degrees down and a gyro on the ESC of the back fan I "think " would take care of that axis.

Yeah ,, without any augmentation on a VTOL they are a hand full especially if you are holding the camera too ;) :D
I would think that the front two just pointed down would work or maybe just make them so they can pivot even 30 degrees back to help a little ,,, you will be suprised at how much 30 degrees of tilt with push you forward.

JS,
after looking through the pics and seeing the vid it's hard to see what actually is happening...it may be my lack of experience with VTOL - I got into RC again here not too long ago with heli's...it loks like, when you pitch forward/back, you need the gryro to counter, correct?
instead of usign a gyro for horiztonal stability (rudder) lke in a heli, you are need one for vertical - pitch - stability correct? How do your fans move from forward to back on this plane? do they move freely?

so you are moving to brushless? what size motors are in there currently (sorry if you already mentioned) and what are you moving to? do you have a budget for this project? in trying to make a gyro recommendation i want to make sure you aren't exceeding budget....also, do you pilot any other rc vehicles?

Yep ,,it takes everything you can get and then some ,,especially when you are doing fans ....

I don't pilot any other RC planes just RC cars over the year....but I was an aircraft mechanic in the Navy for 11 years...does that count..
Js
Rent a pilot ,,it probably will fly the way it is ;) :p  :D

v22,
thanks for the vote of confidence, but really i'm doing this to get the hat trick (hover/translation/fwd flight)....ibut 'll check out the local rc flying club and turn it over to them for flight....luckily living in SoCAL (the aviation capital of the world). I don't forsee any shortage of skilled RC pilots or real ones for that matter.
thanks
