View Full Version : Idea Flight Competition

I all the sudden got this really cool idea. I always hate how i can never goto or enter the flight compititions that come around because of work or something else. My idea is we host a compitition once a week on rc groups. For example we start holding a 3d flight compitition once a week and have a poll to allow viewers to vote for the contestants. What you do is practice a routine in your favorite rc flight sim... then record your flight with fraps or another type of game play recorder. (or use the built in one...if your sim has it). When your pleased with your routine upload(youtube or somewhere simular) it no later then friday and let the votes carry over till sunday. Then the pilot with the most votes wins. Now what you win for now is just the fact that you can brag about beating everyone else. What do you guys think??? I'd love to have a challenge like this.

id like live competitions too- but no one apparently knows whats up with my computer after a new graphics card update with g3 :-(

I'll be useing FMS myself. I have G3 also but i prefer some of the planes people create in FMS. Some of them just have a more realistic feel. There is a handful of great planes for FMS that are configured extremely well.

Oct 02, 2006, 12:28 AM
Also Jon.... All the prices you got for a gfx card to run G3....those are way off. I'm a programmer and also build computers. You can get an connect3D(ATI) x800 256mb Gddr3 gfx card for $88 with 12 pixel pipelines. It's also a PCI-E(PCI express). I use this card and can run oblivion on highest settings along with G3 on a seperate monitor. Check newegg for it

I really like this idea...once my sim gets here (FSOne) I will be sure to start recording! :D

Great!! Still need to draw some more people. I figured a forum of RC plane nuts would be all over this idea..... i guess not. I can't see it not being a successful idea once it gets going. Any ideas for rules or anything are welcome to be said. Please share any ideas with us. Can't wait for the first week of compitition!

Oct 02, 2006, 01:31 PM
lol ok 3D-flyer-93. Also the flight time has to be no less then 45seconds long. No 15 second whirls and then back to earth.

Oct 03, 2006, 09:03 AM
how can I take videos on FMS?
Joshb86
Oct 03, 2006, 01:27 PM
There are a load of recorders on the net. Such as fraps. Google it and you'll get alot of results. Some work better then others.... just find the one you like the best.
3D-flyer-93
Oct 03, 2006, 02:24 PM

Ryan for now it will just be for fun and the joy of the hobby. If it gets big enough which i can't see it not once people get going on it.... then im sure we will gather up prizes
Joshb86
Oct 04, 2006, 01:11 AM
Well guys. I found a new game recorder that i like ALOT better then fraps. It's called zd game recorder(www.zdsoft.com). Here's a little sample video :) excuse the flying...

Fraps is the best by far... http://www2.fraps.com/FRAPS274.EXE There you go!
Joshb86
Oct 04, 2006, 03:16 PM
I've used fraps. I didn't like it....it wouldn't even work half the time. I was looking at that FS One....Man i want it.
jholen
Oct 04, 2006, 07:02 PM
What about fraps did you not like? Fraps in my opinion is hands down the best screenshot/movie app that I've used. Been using it for as long as I can remember.
nathanrcman
Oct 05, 2006, 01:18 AM
I think fraps is great too. im up for the comp. i dont think prizes are needed right now. what ever happened to the FUN of this hobby? sure prizes are good, just a bonus :D later on....
so when officially are we doing this. will be using G3. and by the end of the month G3.5! :)
let me know

Oct 05, 2006, 01:37 AM
Awesome nathanrcman. So far we have me you travis and ryan. I don't think travis has a sim to work with right now....do you travis? If he did then that would be 4 people. We could start the first week's comp if we have atleast 4....but we need some more attention for voters. Think we could get a sticky for this thread? Then when the poll goes up we will have enough people knowing....hey i wanna see how good they are and then vote.
Joshb86
Oct 05, 2006, 01:44 AM
Another rule to keep things in control and fair... The week ends at 6:00pm on friday's. You have untill midnight on friday to post the link to your video. Do not post your video before 6:00pm. Shortly after midnight the poll will go up with each pilot and his video. From there viewers can watch the flights and then vote. Votes will go on untill 6:00pm sunday. At that time the pilot with the most votes wins. Sound good to you guys?
PS: Think we could get a sticky on this thread?
nathanrcman
Oct 05, 2006, 04:30 AM
Sounds good.
Maby a suggestion..video sizes have to be under 30meg for the people not with broadband?? and maby the winner gets a screenshot of them flying, has a trophy pic on it or something and goes down in the virtual fame eg.1st 2nd 3rd places etc in a list at the top of page one?

Joshb86
Oct 06, 2006, 02:44 AM
Thanks :). Im in the process of paying for a honeymoon, building/selling computers, buying planes, and waiting for a ps3. If anyone needs a computer.... tell me what your looking for and i bet i can beat prices by a long shot. Give me an estimate of the power/specs and i'll be able to price ya one.

Oct 06, 2006, 08:06 AM
can I judge?
Joshb86
Oct 06, 2006, 01:29 PM
sure ya can. Everyone that views the forum will be able to judge. What we will do is start a poll and have an option to vote for the pilot of choice

No, I don't have a sim right now, though my sim (FS One) will be shipped out sometime next week...so it will arrive here in about another week 1/2....hopefully...oh, Josh, what kind of PC's are you selling? I am probably not going to be able to purchase one yet as I am only 14 years of age...just curious...I was looking for something along the lines of...
• 2-3 Ghz Processor
• 1-2 GB RAM
• nVidia GeForce 6000 class graphics card pre-installed...(preferably the 6600GT)
• high-front bus speed
something like that...to run the FS One...the computer I am on now can run the FS One, but it only meets the minimum system requirements.
Joshb86
Oct 06, 2006, 03:56 PM
I build game machines. Usually i use custom cases that light up and look at neat. I can actually provide those for a good price if the customer wants one. Or i can stick with the basic case. I'm mainly an AMD builder. Reason being is it's a higher demand by gamers and more bang for the buck. However the new intel's are very nice... I'll price you a build and post it in a couple of hours.
Joshb86
Oct 06, 2006, 04:19 PM
Ok travis. This is a start layout. And yes you can change or customize anything you wish and i'll adjust the price. This is a budget machine with plenty of kick to play even games like oblivion or fear. ...
1: Motherboard is an AMD socket 754 compatible with PCI-Express x16 slot - Elitegroup
2: Processor is AMD sempron 64 3400 at 2.4ghz(equal to 3.4ghz intel)
3: RAM is 1gb AMPO DDR PC3200 speed.
4: Video card is a powercolor x800 gto 256mb Gddr3 (ATI Chipset)
this card has gddr3 and is a very good card.
5: Hard Drive is Samsung 160gb 7200 rpm
6: Disc drive is a MadDog DVD r / DVD r-w / cd r / cd r-w / dvd-cd
7: Simple grey ATX case
The price on this build is around 370 without the shipping on the parts. The parts shiping to me will be about $23.... then all you add is the labor which i'll give you a good deal on.... and the shipping to you. I actually have a setup like this i use often. I'm running that video card into my flat hdtv so i got a nice big nice looking monitor lol. Runs oblivion on max settings and boy does it look beautiful.
Ryan Archer
Oct 06, 2006, 05:02 PM
wow! that is a very good price!
do you sell laptops to?
i am looking to buy a laptop.
ryan
Joshb86
Oct 06, 2006, 05:15 PM
Sorry ryan. Laptop's are still to integegrated to custom build. It wont be long though.... laot of them are starting to have more swapable attributes.
Travis22304
Oct 06, 2006, 07:01 PM
Whoa!!! Only $392.00!?!?!? (excluding labor) I'll keep saving my money!!! I have just over $200 something from chore money saved over the years...hehe...when the time comes, I'll shoot you a PM or something!
PS. Do you sell just the Graphics Cards themselves? It would have to be AGP up to 8X...if you could find me a good deal on the 6600GT I would definately purchase it! Thank you!
Travis22304
Oct 06, 2006, 07:04 PM
They eventually should turn this flight competition into an actual even hosted by a major brand or something, that actaully gives away prizes for the best flyers in specified age groups...That would be amazing...having a professional flight simulator comptetition....with different age groups, that gave away prizes...sorry to repeat myself, it is just if anyone willing to host such an event is "listening!"
Joshb86
Oct 06, 2006, 07:11 PM
You referring to the nividia 6600 GT 128mb AGP?
jholen
Oct 06, 2006, 08:06 PM
For graphics cards I would suggest looking into a 6800GS if you are willing to spend what it costs to get a 6600GT. Just my opinion though :)
Travis22304
Oct 06, 2006, 08:58 PM
Yeah I was referring to the nVidia GeForce 6600GT 128MB AGP, so, the 6800GS is the same price then? Because I can get the 6600GT for $120.00. Is the 6800GS cheaper? Does it deliver better performance?
Joshb86
Oct 06, 2006, 09:17 PM
Well for a brand new card. He meant if you are willing to spend 120 then why not spend alittle more on a better one. A 6800 gs will cost more. Just incase you didn't know.... The computer i priced has a PCI-express gfx card. For those that don't know..... AGP was the standard over the regular pci slot for video. It stands for Accelerated Graphics port. max is x8. PCI-express is x16.... twice as fast. It might be wise to do a mother board upgrade and then get a pci-express video card. It's up to you.... but if you want i can price you a mobo + gfx card combo
Joshb86
Oct 07, 2006, 01:50 AM
I'll need to know what kind of cpu you have so i can determine what socket the mother board is. For an estimate..... For alittle more then what you found the 6600 gt for... I could have you a nice mother board and a pci-express graphics card running about 256mb gddr3. Just post the name of your processor and the type of ram your computer has. If i don't reply soon then it's because i left for my honeymoon. I'll try and get online while im gone.....if not then i'll be back thursday.

I'll be useing FMS myself. I have G3 also but i prefer some of the planes people create in FMS. Some of them just have a more realistic feel. There is a handful of great planes for FMS that are configured extremely well.
Funny, I have tried 100s of planes that were created fro FMS and I can nto find one that even flys close to the real thing. Flight physics are way off on most anything in FMS.
Try some of the downloaded aircraft for G3 on the knifeedge.com site. There are some insanely correct aircraft there. Even the stock 3D yak in G3 is far more realistic then anything I have downloaded for FMS.
So using FMS for a 3d type online competition would nto be my choice. My daughter can do 3D type stuff on FMS.
Travis22304
Oct 07, 2006, 06:21 PM
I have an AMD athlon XP 2400+... and 512MB of RAM...The exact model that I have is the eMachines T2341...
Joshb86
Oct 12, 2006, 12:33 PM
Hmm.... That means your mother board will be a socket 462 so a mobo(with pci-e) / gfx upgrade won't work. I dont recall there being pci-e support on that socket board. It may be best to just do a ram and gfx upgrade for now.
Joshb86

Sure, but I'm not in charge, haven't you asked that several times already? ^.^ Anyway, my video is ready, now it's my first attempt at 3D flight, it was the "Fight Training" that the FS One offers that allowed me to pull off what I think was "3D Flight..." ^.^ Tell me when I should post it! It is approximately 20MB, at 1:25 long.
edit: PS, this is also my first attempt at editing, I added a little music and had to edit the film because I was using the FRAPS demo. ^.^ Enjoy!
