Not sure if anyone has tried this but I read an article yesterday about the ability to stream live video from a remote location using a cell phone and its wireless network.
If this were true would this not make a video downlink possible over long distances with out much effort?

The phone bill sucks compared to free 2,5ghz or similar
There is also another issue with a high flying craft near a city with lots of cells to contact
If eneogh high flying model planes or for example a airliner craft with all passengers trying to use thier phones it can lead toa overload and mobile system crash as the system wasnt meant to tranmit skywards
the reason for this a typical surface phone will contact a few cells reqest the best signal and lock onto that cell and each cell passes the signal along as you move
A high flying craft with a cell phone over a city will contact thousands of cells and for triangular reasons all stations will have similar signal strenth confusing the cell network coupled with sudden major jumps to far away cells this leads to high computer demands
put a airliner up there with lots of cells and the system will probably crash
and the bill sucks

I have one of Cingular's PDA phones. There are a few applications out there that would allow you to stream a web cam over the unit. At that point you'd be paying for data transfered over the network. I don't think I'd rush out to replace my existing system just yet. The Edge Network is still pretty flakey in some areas.

I am talking about the new 4g network that should be more avalible in the comign years. 4g provides 1gb/s download speeds. Also 4g enables you to be moving at the same time that you are connected to the internet.

yes thats what i hear.
This is already possible in japan and korea where they have 20gb/s download on wireless.
they also have wireless tv on the new cell phones

ive heard the sling box is not very good.
Ive read what it can do and it is amazing!
GB/s is correct. i know it doesnt seem possible does is but in japan downloads of entire movies are measured in seconds not 10's of hours.

My sisters laptop has a 3g connection
its like a usb stick and she can surf the web for a fixxed monthly price for download limit of some 2GB per month at a speed of 0.4MB
but its EEEEKKKK like $60 per month
The signal is similar to tel mobile signal except it is in packets for web use and so you dont get charged per minute and signal goes to most suitable mast and signal uses a much higher frequency than old style mobiles so can carry a lot more info
The service bill if you exceed the download limit for your primary country(country of origin ) is high typical $0.25cent per mbyte( so using it a lot or using it on holidays in other countries can cost you an arm and a leg I seen my sister bills and you could run a big car for that money )
She uses it a lot all over Europe and in South Africa and Canada and her work pays for it
You can do skype calls through the lap top
The system can slow down a lottttttttt down to snail pace worse than landline 56kbytes and for long periods several hours at peak times suspect contension rates can exceed a hundred at peaks
I imagine 4G is simmilar system but whole lot faster and can probably go into phones as well as laptops
probably still have issues from high height transmission issues if close to cities with many cells but probably lesser problems if your only fying at 1000 feet in the sticks where ther are a few cells masts
You could bernifit from onboard tracking of cell unit but those services tend to be like $30 for ten requests and they dont expect every few seconds a request
sounds do able but I dont like the sound of the bill as I presume 4G will cost a whole lot more than 3g

In Finland we currently use 3G network at 1900Mhz band.
Highest dataspeed that can be achieved is nearly the same as 1024kbit adsl but latency times are higher (about 300-1000ms). 3g also supports video calls between two compatible cell phones.
Currently i use Nokia N80 (of course nokia as i am finnish) and using the network costs me 59euros/month (round 70dollars) and the monthly payment allows me to talk 3000 minutes without extra payment and also 3000 short text messages, 3000 multimedia messages and 3000 minutes of video calls.
I also can use unlimited amount of gprs transit.
I guess that is quite cheap when compared to other countries. Also per minute priced network costs when you donīt pay any monthly costs are quite cheap, around 0,069 euros per minute.
I have used my cell phone as telemetry and video link on my easyglider as i was testing what should be best option to use as uplink.
Currently i think that cellphone is the best option when the range goes over 50km.
Symbian based phones are easy to program and you can get a lot out of them as you can connect it easily to any systems on your plane by usb or bluetooth.

Meaning that i can use internet as much i like if someone didnīt get it.

Also i donīt know what european 3g network is when compared to yankee standards.
Last time i were in states i bought cellie and after i left New York and started driving to west that cellie didnīt had network available :)

Heads up putting a cellphone in a flying object is against FCC rules cellphones are not certified to be used high above cell towers moving at high speed.
This is why you cant use them on the Comercial Aircraft. Satelite phones are another story.

My sister company sent her a bill for her EU use of 3G for a few miserable Web pages
$300 or some euros 200
th roaming rate around EU for Non EU 3G laptop
is $2.50 per kilobyte or Euros 1.50
My sister uses the system In South Africa here resident country and she stays inside her one megabyte limit but the excess in South Africa is something like 50 cent per megabyte
She could have got the same web pages hand posted personnely to her in the hotels in EU as she roamed EU for half the money
I shant be sending my UAV with its 3G laptop aboard to other countries in the EU as I will get cleaned out fast
and I shall make sure I am suffiently far from the frontier of the other country so that no chance I can get hooked onto the other countries Mast
