I have an old profile C/L "stunt" plane that has been in the family for a long time. I would like to convert it to RC and elect. the fuse is 36" and the wing is 48". 1 1/2" thick sym. airfoil. Slight taper with average chord 8 1/2 minus ailoron. How much power will i need ? Do i need to make the bottom of the wing flatter? It is in sad shape and will need a total rebuild.
Thanks for your help. KEITH

It was probaby designed for a 19-40 at that size.

CL wires add a LOT of drag.

I'd start around the 300-500W mark for similar performance ;)

You'd best weigh it and figure out what the final weight with equipment is likely to be first.

Also a lot of CL aerobatic models didn't have enough vertical tail area.

A lot of the controlline stunt ships did not have any main wing dihedral either. They then had excessively large elevators to make up for such.

Consider cleaning it up, and placing it on a shelf. One fellow told me last year they were getting $1000 in N.Y. antique stores for old unaltered control line models.

Those old stunt ships, with more vertical area, and smaller motors.. a .25 instead of .35, would be killers r/c'd.
I did a Ringmaster as a sloper... miserable failure, too much drag from the wing, but with an enginer or a motor.... it could be a zinger!
I have one waiting for its turn...

Even combat wings work - use elevons..the big danger is no fins..but those can be added.

You need to be a bit of a pliot though - but then you always did, even on wires ;)

Also, dont forget to check if the plans have the wing longer on one side than the other. That is one way they made sure it didnt fly in at u !!

My main area of expertise (most would say my only area :)) is CL stunt and I've carried the design philosophy over to RC. There's an article at http://www.holdfastmac.com.au/kenny1.html on an RC stunter I designed and built for my son.

One other thing I've done is to convert a CL stunter that didn't live up to expectations into an RC model. The flaps were converted to ailerons simply by cutting through the flap horn wire and inserting servos into each wing. It already had a moveable rudder so that was easy. The original engine was a piped 40 so I took that out and fitted a normal side exhaust engine and used the pipe tunnel to hide the rest of the RC gear. It flew beautifully as RC even with one wing panel being an inch longer and with the original leadouts dangling from the left wing :). The conversion added another 14 ounces to the all up weight which made it 4 pound 4 ounces but with 750 square inches of wing area that didn't bother it too much.

What Sparky Paul said about them making killer RC models is quite right.

Sparky, How much did you increase the VT area on your Ringmaster?

.
I moved the whole thing back about an inch and a half after the first flights..
Then gave up on it as a sloper.
The next one will be powered.. probably by something in the .25 class.
