I set up FMS on my grandfathers computer. I have all the controls working, its just that the scenery seems to hang up and then catch up to your present position. I tried getting rid of the smooth option, no change. I am on 16 bit colors. The program doesn't lag so much when you are in the air, more when you are close to the ground with a lot of graphics flowing by. Any help is greatly appreciated!

A 3D graphics card will make all the difference in the world. Spend about $50 and get a good one or about $100 and get a nice one.
I've used a $50 3D card on a 400Mhz AMD K5 and it worked just fine.

Spec on your grandfathers computer would help, but on the face of it I would agree with the previous poster in that the graphics is simply not up to the job, even for FMS !

I spent $35.00 for a card, (nVidia GeForce FX 5200) and I can run G3 and FMS etc... with NO lag at all...I have...
•AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (2.00Ghz)
•512MB RAM
•nVidia GeForce FX 5200 (128MB)

The computer is a newer dell laptop, it has a NVIDIA GeForce 5200. I am pretty sure the card should be able to handle it. I has a 1400 MHz processor also. I cannot figure out why the lag. I reloaded the program, to no avail.

do you have it set to primary graphics driver (file/graphics card) ? It should work as I have it on my stinky dell latitude (dont buy one) and it works great.
Could it be that you have another issue with how you've set it up. I guess you are using pc joy and also a tx?

Laptops are notorious for slowing down the computer to reduce power and battery drain and limit full speed operation. Make sure you have power saving turned off when connected to AC power. Also, run "DXDIAG" and find out how much memory is allocated to the graphics adapter and whether it is running in 3D mode or not. No 3D mode with tiny bits of graphic memory will slow things down.

Are you sure you have "fixed camera" checked in the View menu? If it's unchecked, your camera view will lag behind the model, in other words it won't keep the model in the center of your screen.
Just for reference, I run a loaner box that's a nominal AMD K6-2 350 MHz machine with an ancient VooDoo 2000 16 meg card, And I run FMS vers 2.85 fine. It's a little slow when flying my complex models like my WWI bipes. Remember to get DirectX 8.1 or above for your video software.
