View Full Version : Discussion More than one GPS Receiver?...

I’m adding a redundant GPS receiver to my UAV (for moving map position downlink) and wish to know if anyone has had any negative experience or knows of potential problems with GPS receivers in close proximity with one another?

I have a Garmin GPS18LVC mounted on the top/center of the wing and want to put the new (micro) GPS receiver up there somewhere too.

Thanks…

I saw a paper where they used 2 gps receivers in differential gps systems to tell the airframe attitude.

I've seen multiple antenna agricultural systems where the antennas were pretty close together. I'm thinking of placing the receivers about 3-4" apart left to right centered at the top of the wing.

Hmmmm....

Jeff,

I havent got that much of experience, but my Garmin Geko has been placed about 3" from my PicoGPS a couple of times and so far I havent noticed any problems.
Not very scientific, I know, but it seems to work fine in my setup!

I work on corporate jets most of which use dual GPS navigation systems. I have only heard of two things that have interfered with GPS. One was that some VORs use a frequency which is a harmonic of the GPS signal and this caused the GPS to lose it's signal when the nav radio was tuned to that VOR. The other issue is with transmitting antennas too near the GPS antenna (our problems mostly come from satcom telephone systems). Usually the GPS receivers are mounted cloe together in the aircraft I have dealt with (no problems there). Unless your downlink is near the GPS and close to the same frequency then neither of these should effect your setup.

Hope this helps,
Tim
