Well I did it, I joined the local boat club today. I have sailed with these guys a few weeks now and they are pretty good people so I decided to join up with them. We meet on Sundays at noon on Mnt. Trashmore lake and sail around till we are too hot, too cold, tired, hungry, or afraid of getting in trouble at home. I took some pics of the boats that showed up today. If anyone is interested in the boat for sale then PM me or E-mail me and I will see what kind of info I can get you about it.

Well the flooding we had this week turned out to be a good thing for our lake. It is not only full but too full now!!! The water has receeded about 1 foot in the lake since the flooding on Friday and is still 6 to 8 inches over normal. The lake rose over 3 feet in one day!!!!! Now to the boats :)
I brought the Thomas Massey out to the lake in hopes that the wind would be calm enough to sail her. She is missing her pilot house, masts and alot of detail but she is fit enough for some sea trials. The boat did really good on the water but it does not like getting hit broadside with a wave it really tosses her around bad. I think that the fins on the lower part of the hull will solve that but the stock ones are wood and really thick so I will make some out of styrene and try that.
We did not have a huge turnout today but we did have a few nice boats come out to play and here they are. I have duty next sunday wich is bad cause that is when my club meets...and... we are going to be at an indoor pool in Virginia Beach. Oh well maybe next year I can make it to this show. THe following week we will be at a 2 day event near the USS Wisconsin. I will make sure to get some pics of our boats and the beautiful BB64 as well.

OK guys here are some really nice pics comming up. This is at a seafood festival in Norfolk, VA. There was a good turnout of boats and even a few tanks as well. (one was amphibous). I gave my Toyama a good sea trial and all went well there. we had little wooden boats for the kids that came to see us and they would sail them in the water with us. Enjoy the pics and as always comments welcome.

P.S. The Amsterdam is still for sale, PM me if you want any info on it.

show some pix of your fast boat :D

:) OK next time it makes it to the lake I will. My club is for electric boats only and my only fast one is gas so it will be out laters. Being an Unlimited Hydro tho it needs smooth water and the last few times I have been to the lake with it the water has been anything but smooth.

That "scratch built" fishing boat is a Hellen trawler from the Latina kit. Nicely done! We run one also. The "lil fishing boat" in your first photo set is a Dumas Victory tug, also nicely executed. Thanks for posting all the fine pictures of these great little ships! I wish there was a club here where we are.

HI Mark thanks for promoting the club. This is Jason by the way. Just to clarify Jake is the one who started the fising boat Doug is finishing up but hes not gone yet, unfortunetly he doesnt have long he was a great guy to go sailing with and we are all going to miss him. The NOAA Whiting is all scratch built and the lifeboat davits work. Darrel does not bring it out much and hes working on a model thats even larger and more detailed. the amphibious tank is a am-trak Dennis scratch built it out of sentra every show he comes to there are always a few Marines that go ape for it. I think one of the neatest boats there was your freghter that was small enough to have fun with in the pool none of my stuff is small enough for it. I think I might just have to do a conversion on a small plastic model so we can run together.

Very nice. You guys are lucky to have so many fellow boaters to run with. Here in the great city of Garmisch it is only me :(

I dont see why you could not start your own club. I am not familiar with your local laws but I dont see any problem with getting afew guys/gals together to meet at the local pond and run a few boats. Can you see if local hobby stores will allow you to post flyers to see if there is some interest in your area? That is how I would start.

The problem is just a lack of people. Garmisch is a ski resort and farmer town. The residents are very traditional Bavarians. They believe in the "old" ways. We do not have a local hobby shop here in Garmisch. I could drive to Munich but that is almost a hour away. There is at least one other person I know that operates boats but he is somewhat un-American and thinks we are all evil war hungry people. That rules him out as someone I would like to hang out with.
I will be relocating in the next couple of months as my Military time is up. I have accepted a GS position in Ohio. I know the area I am going to has a flying club and a hobby shop so I am hopefull there will be other boaters. I enjoy planes but my true passion is boats.

Well today was a really windy day but there was a pretty good showing of boats. Not too many actually made it out on the water but a few did. there were even two that made it out under the water. I gave my Nikko conversion a trial but it was just as slow as the stock boat is so back to the drydock for some more mods. We even had some armor out on the water as well. This was neat to see and I captured a few pics of the amphib running around in the lake. It looks like it is taking on water but it is just not ballanced correctly with the aft battery missing. Well here are the pics I hope you all enjoy.

P.S. The USS Skipjack is the first sub I have ever seen in action and I even got to take a few minutes at the controls. It was an interesting boat to drive.

Details , details, we want details on that amphib............
Massey
Sep 25, 2006, 05:04 AM
What I know of the amphib is that it was scratch built with a few kit parts on it. Iwill see about getting some more details next week if he shows up at our meet.

The are no kit parts on the anphib Dennis built it with the help of the am-trak guys at the Little Creek Anphib base even the camo is correct. he casts alot of his parts and made the hull out of sentra. It uses motors out of an electric scooter. Dennis gets complements on it buy Marines every time he brings it to a show. Sorry I couldn't get out to the lake Mike looks like I missed alot thanks for the picks. Who had the pontoon out there? On a side note the sub is very nice the same guy built a model of the alligator sub for the discovery channel documentery and I belive he worked on the subs for crimson tide or Red October.

Are there any details on the Mark V SOC with the water jets in the pictures?
What scale is it, I assume it is scratch built? Looks great. I have been interested in building one.

I'm currently driving about an hour to our clubs lake to run models. Where at in Ohio? I live in the Cleveland area and am currently the president of the Cleveland Model Boat Club (http://www.clevelandmodelboat.com/). and am also a rep for the SSMA (http://www.ssmana.org/). There is a scal club near Toledo, and another ntro club near Cleveland. I know we can hook you up with a club, or at least a big regatta.

Pretty good turnout today even tho it was raining in the morning. SOme new showings came to us today and the favorite was the USS Coral Sea CV 43, with planes ready to fly. After the club went home DirtySouth and I brought out our Hydros and had a little fun... Crashes and flips included. Check the pics out and as always comments and questions welcome

check out that rooster :D while the elam needs cosmetic surgery,i also didnt go home unbruised.low speed needle valve fell off, thats why i was being towed.but when i got home i couldnt get flexdrive out.the drive was literally being held on by a thread.one more lap and i would have lost the drive but also my prop.too much tourque on the stock flexdrives.think i need a thicker one.but at least she didnt look like a oarnge bouy like last time :censored:

LOL yea too bad I didnt have my camera that day :P
Your shaft according to TLR is a .130 the next size up from that is a .150. I have .150 and I dont see a problem at all with mine and as you know we have the same engine. I think TLR sells a .150 conversion for your boat, I was just on their site. See ya out there soon
Oh and as for the cosmetic surgury the dammage is alot worse that I first thought. There are cracks all the way around into the transom and the whole little float in the rear there is severly stress cracked. I am going to have to cut top of the hull off and reinforce the float area from the inside then reinstall the removed parts and hope for the best. I think this hull is going to become a U-16 Miss Elam (The backup boat painted all white with the same graphics)

sorry to hear about your boat the pics don't do it justice I personaly would use the same colors but thats me. just out of curiosity how much does a set up like that cost if you don't mind ?
Massey
Oct 02, 2006, 05:39 PM
Which boat? I am guessing the Miss Elam. The stock ready to run boat from Proboat costs $299. I since have upgraded my radio (Free It was laying around the house not being used) to a JR XR2 and the servos were changed out to a Z290 throttle and a Z590 for rudder. The last and prolly the best mod I have done was upgrade the engine to an OS .18CVR-MX ($130). I am currently repairing the boat check out this thread for better crash dammage photos and the updates on the repair.

it gets even better...i need a new motor now.sending this one back to hobbico for warranty :censored: seems a certain rudder was causing cooling issues therefore overheating the motor.didnt help that low speed adjustment fell out at high speed

Massey,
Thanks for the thread. I used to go with a friend of my dad's to Mt Trashmore in the 70's to retrieve his gas boats with my dad's canoe. That was before they turned Trashmore into a park and 264 was a toll road! I guess that was my influence for getting into this hobby!
