View Full Version : Discussion 60" Kinetic Pics/Video and Mini Review (198mph maiden)

Im in LOVE :D :D my favorite 60" plane EVER!... the Kinetic is Flat out CRAZY!... its FAST, it hooks a turn like you wouldnt believe and it doesnt like to Flick/Tipstall at all... its SO predictable on the front... no bad habbits and nothing out of the ordinary (Except the speed!) then you dive in the back... WOW.. this is where it shows its true colors... it is out of this world fast.. it just keeps acclerating, it actually speeds up out of the turns. It responds to "Snap Flap" like a fish in water... there is a noticable difference with and without it. CG is dead perfect where it says to put it (3.1")...

anyhow... gotta run right now, but i can sum up the whole flight experiance of this baby in 1 word.... "WOW"

BTW- in 20-25mph winds today i went 198mph on its maiden flight :D :D :D :D :D
D.S. (Dean) was grinnin' from ear to ear when i let him fly it so i could get some video and pictures...

Begining of the video doesnt really show the frontside turns it can pop, it was just handed off to dean to fly while i filmed and he was getting a feel for the plane as to what he could get away with.

Spencer,

She looks like a beaut! Are you going to incorporate the changes Joe requested into the next models out of the mold, or do all your guys on the list need to request their own specifics?

Personally, I would rely on the expertise of your early list guys. I think everyone that buys this model has similar goals - to get the most speed out of her possible.

i should point out about the offset and shorter ailerons... thats a give and take...

with FULL throw and deflection (125%) its JUST enough to fly on the frontside to trim and get altitude for the dive in... but its NOT a nimble, fast rolling plane modded like this... it has 1 goal in mind and thats to break a record... and these ailerons are perfect for that! :)

although i had PLENTY of aileron for DS'ing, if you want it to be an all around model, dont ask for this mod... you will be sacraficing a lot of your roll rate. but surprisingly enough this was enough aileron to get the advantage of snap flaps, and enough to help slow it down for Spoilerons on landing...

Damm I hate compromises!

I am going to go with the full length ailerons. Was one of your mods servo placement, or was that as originally designed by Spencer?

KingOfTheHill
Aug 27, 2006, 12:10 AM
from what i remember him saying the Servo locations are already located in the molds.. so even now i have flat covers over where the flap servo would be located...

on mine, since the servo placement was already pre-set, thats why the ailerons have been moved more to a middle location.. if it was flat on the bottom and i could have chosen, i would have brought the servo out further towards the tip so there would be more aileron at the end of the wing where its more effective and efficent...

Dean was cool enough to go out of his way to meet me to drop off my video camera... got some video (Not great but some) of its maiden flight... some good speeds too... and some examples of how fast my roll rate is on the frontside..

How long are your ailerons relative to the wing. approx: 50%?

KingOfTheHill
Aug 27, 2006, 12:20 AM
For refrence...

Destiny is mid panel to tip at
16" Long x 1.25" thick

Kinetic is mid panel
11.75" Long x 1" root side tapering to .75" going outward

In that case I am definately going to want full span ailerons. What is your set up in terms of servos Joe? Did you have any issues placing the servo in the tail? How about thickness of the wing for aileron servos?

thanks for the info.

suggested gear is...

D60 in the tail
125/5125's in the flaps/ailerons

My gear install was
125mg in the tail
85mg's in the ailerons..

all of my servo covers now have a lump in them but do seal... all servo's i chose are a little stout but its what i feel comfortable with... the bulges are so small i dont think i'll see much penalty's.... BUT if i were to do it again, i would run 125mg's or 5125mg's all around if i had the $... i ran 85mg's cause i had them new in boxes and local shops were out of 125mg's...

The servo placing on the tail is *kinda* tricky but not difficult.. both sides have Z-bends so there is no adjusting.. you have to get it right and get it 0-0 on the servo and elevator before the glue drys... for placing the elevator servo i used GOOP (So i had time to adjust and lock in place while it dried) and used Epoxy/microballoons on the ailerons..

JOe

Joe- why no clevis on one end of the elevator arm?

KingOfTheHill
Aug 27, 2006, 12:58 AM
there is no room for a clevis on the inside where the servo is... and to be able to use a clevis on the elevator side would require a large notch in the tail to clear it..

but just because im saying this doesnt mean it cant be done... ive seen some creative stuff here on RCGroups... heck, ive never seen Spencer's setup... maybe his does?.. no doubt someone im sure will figure something out.

One last question - are you using Snap Flap during DS circles, or only on the front side?

KingOfTheHill
Aug 27, 2006, 01:16 AM
Spencer told me to use it... so i tried it with and without and trying different
%'s till i thought felt best..

There was a very noticable gain by using the Snap Flap on both Frontside and backside... turning it on and off while using the same air was intresting to see how the plane responded...

With them off the plane turned as well as most of the other 60" planes on the market.. but with the snap flap it easily pulled ahead in my book to the hardest turning 60" plane ive come across so far. and this was with the smaller ailerons..

i bet with a normal build on this plane with the flaps and ailerons coupled for full TE snap flap it would be out of this world...

Nice footage.
Plane looks very stable.
Hope to see you push it up to a new record...
Looks like a good combination of skills and quality airframe.

Well that was fun! :) I have to apologize for the conservative flying while you shot the video, but I was having trouble staying calm while flying somebody else's plane that neither one of us are very familiar with yet. It sure does fly nice and even though I was concerned that the ailerons would be too small, I was totally happy with them while I was flying it and I would absolutely order the same modification for my own Kinetic. ( I haven't actually ordered one.........yet ) I think all of the fast DS in the vid was while you were flying it except the part where I pulled to vertical as I crossed the road. I won't soon forget that climb out, I have never seen a plane climb completely out of sight so quickly. Not even a speck for a few seconds. That was cool!

Joe, really nice looking plane, big speed for a maiden flight in 20mph at Vincent. Really looks like it turn hard and accelerates good. Looks like Spencer has himself a real winning design.

Way to Go Joe! Looks like a new PB shouldn't be too much trouble for you this fall.

I like the blue accents! It makes the wing look a lot bigger than 60".

Thanks for the feedback on the building and flying!

BTW -- using a clevis on the elevator would require hogging out a good bit of the vert stab TE for clearance. If it proves difficult for builders to make the pushrod correctly, I may just include it in the kit in the future. After building a few, its now a piece of cake...

Can't wait to see you fly in some 50mph stuff :D :D (Although, I should tell you about the remotely activated airbrake I hid in there to keep you just under my PB  )

i have to say, thats the nicest lookin 60 on the market, imho. great job spencer on your design! JOe's the one 'team' flyer that any manufacturor would want to fly their products to new heights. this fall/winter should kick out some insane speeds for both of ya.

cool pics. especailly the new stone hinge barriers up at vincent! not to mention that cool new waterfall fed lake that has spawned since my last visit there. :D

man is this gonna be a good S/A season :)

between the kinetic and carbon destiny i have never been so excited about the upcoming season....

mark my words... SOMEBODY in socal will clear 250mph this year with a 60" composite plane.... there should be a few more Kinetics out there ready, plenty of Beefy Carbon Destiny's and Joe manor as always with his deadly dynamics.....

this is gonna be a season to remember

id give you that for your RTF 100"

Actually,

The Kinetic 100" is in the works... Lots of different ideas floating around in the old noggin on that one...

Does anyone else see any value in a 100" 3pc wing where the tips can be flown separately as a 2pc 60"? I like the 3pc design for the 100" wing since the joiners will inherently spanload the wing... I know it would suck to crash the 60" er and take the 100" out of commission at the same time... Perhaps you could just buy an extra set of tip panels...

Spencer

wouldnt that make the fuse and stab for the 60" really big?

That's weird cuz I was going to comment from the vid it looks like it tracks a thousand times better than my Destiny

I am still a huge fan of the Destiny... and bang for the buck its amazing and i do like how it fly's... but the kinetic tracks better...

now although it tracks better during the inital dive in and getting up to speed.. i didnt notice much tracking difference at around130-140mph+...

seems like the destiny's undersized tail and shorter fuse isnt as much as an issue at the higher speeds...

the 100" would be easier if it was a 2 piece wing, and less work b/c 2 less joiners to make first off. but if you are thinking about making one, put me on the list spencer!!

i cant wait for my kinetic!! i think it will be nothing but true speed aka KE.

I'd go 3 piece.

That square optical delusion thing is cool, I'm thinking about painting that design on my racecar body!
