Is there any advantage in using a 6V as opposed to a 4.8V bty for RX and servos where either is acceptable? (Futaba R137GP Rx and S3001 servos).

it will up the troque speed and power of your servos.
but the batterys dont last as long.

.
In large airplanes, yes.
In small airplanes, the extra cell weight isn't needed.

not necessarily spit the kid-
most 6v packs have a higher capacity- at around 1400 mAh to 2500 mAH for 6v packs which will give great power for around 10 flights
i know im using one - however if you have the highest capacity nicad/nimh - they use C sized cells or sub c and are a little heavier than the odd 4.8v rx nicad - (hm alot heavier) but you can use AA sized rx nicad packs which are 6v 1500 mah

i have 2 6v 2000 mah NIMH Rx packs in 2 of my planes now , i find the servos to be alot more responsive and the charge holds alot longer than any Nicd rx pack of the same mah , i make my own Rx packs and i find it to be quite cheaper than buying them now , im thinkin about making my own 9.6v(i think that is how many volts they are) 2000mah Tx packs since the Rx packs i have made havent given me any trouble. my computer radio seems to eat the juice in the batt. up pretty quick.

Thanks for all replies - most useful. In the end, I have ordered a 4.8V NiMH 2200mAH bty and a similar 9.6 one for the Tx. My just bought second-hand 8UAp has 5-6 yr old NiCDs so I thought it prudent to replace them.

I also thought of making up my own packs but I found a price for already made packs with Futaba plugs that dissuaded me from doing it myself. Need to sort out a charger for the NiMH packs now! Think I'll make a constant current one and charge at C/10 overnight.

You'll like the unit.
One caveat.
When you program one function into one switch, do not program another function on the same switch, erroneously.
There is NO reset possiblity on the older units. You HAVE to send it back somewhere for service, since only "they" know the magic on how to do that.

If you have more than 8 planes, you can built a simple cheap Campac from parts readily available.

Thanks for the heads-up on the sw programming. I hope it hasn't already been done! What is the effect you see if you do it? Guess that means you have to make up your mind and live with it? I don't intend doing anything clever for a while.

I am just trying to sort out the basics. I have reset the models stored and am familiarising my way around. Discovered one of the trims was dead in one direction. Turned out to be a dry joint. Hope that's all there is wrong!

Saw articles about the DIY campac. It will be a while before I need 8 models stored though!

The problem, with older units, is more or less with the "throttle cut off" and the "throttle cut down" function. If you want to program "trottle cut off", but you are really in the "trottle cut down mode", and you assign a particular switch lever, and then you say "oops, wrong mode", then you can not reset, to start all over in the real "trottle cut off" mode. Your trannie is essentially unusable now.
Been there done that.

Just be carefull in which mode you are when you start programming the trannie.

Think of it..... "Throttle Cut Off", looks very similar to "Trottle Cut Down".

BTW, if you do use Trottle Cut Off, then set it to do it at 40%.
