Yeah, easy now, this is for a 7yo (and his dad a bit ;-)!

Thinking of upgrading my son's RC car, he's got some Dacko thing now
which is not bad (it has not broken) but is a bit slow, in particular
on grass.

I see 2 alternatives:

- Lego Dirt Crusher, seems very robust and is probably fast enough

- Some basic "proper" RC car.

The Lego car is likely to be cheaper; what would he get more with the
alternative? Would it stand up to your average (neither violent nor
timid) 7yo?

The biggest question is: how much <max> are you willing to spend?

I am in Denmark, so don't be too shocked by the prices :-/

The Lego car is officially retailing at DKK1200, but can always be
found at DKK1000 (or even less if you are lucky).

The Tamiya QD models are officially at DKK1500, but I am sure you could
find better prices.

If there is a good reason to prefer somethinf TAMIYA or similar I guess
DKK15-1800 would be ok, but I don't want to pay more money for
something I have to fix all the time if you can follow me...

Oh, the prices above are incl sales taxes etc.
