Has anybody built one?as im building my creole queen my cousin's 4 year old son asked me to build him a boat, some thing just to run with me around a small pond, but what kind of esc, motor, and bat's would be good for going -10mph and a good run time?$100 all I can spend.

Not a bad little boat. $100 for the boat esc and batteries may be a little tough. the hull and hardware are going to run you over $70 almost $80. For under $200 tho boat and running grear (no radio that is about $60-100 alone) I would go with a 5 pole 380 motor and use a LRP Quantum micro reversable #84051 It is 100% waterproof and has a falesafe so it will not run wild if it gets out of range. (I can vouch for the waterproofing it was in my tug when I sank it and still works fine) My LHS got it to me for about $75 Then I would power the boat with a 6 cell sub C pack like a sport 2000 (about $25) and that should give you about 2 hours of run time with that little hull. I get about 3 hours from my Vac-u-tug using a 3000 mAh battery, and the same ESC motor combo. My tug goes at full throttle about walking speed so a little deep Vee hull with a prop for speed should go a wee bit faster and make the kid happy.

The Dumas Short Stuff comes in two building version's - fiberglass or wood hull. Tower Hobbies only carries the wood hull, go to Dumas Products website. The fiberglass is on my built list, looks like a fun build and boat - gas or electric powered

I have built two of the fiberglass versions of the shortstuff
currently both are running the graupner 1160 hydro drive 500 size outdrive ($56.00 at hobby-lobby), the classic futaba mc230 ESC (purchased with the radio), and a 6 cell 1100 mah nimh pack, to reduce weight.
It is an excellent sport boat with this setup, zero maintenance.
the only tweek i have made to the hull is the addition of chine strips to keep the water from running up the side of the hull, and a set of trim tabs on the back.

Dumas has the fiberglass hull listed at $39.00 and the wood hull at $42.00 - (interesting), you should be able to piece together a new system - boat kit, running hardware, motor, radio, esc, radio, and battery, for approx.$150.00 to $160.00, and have a good quality fun system. Up grade to gas when the boy is older!

tsenecal - did you consider going gas on one of the builds?

nope, I don't do internal combustion...
with the setup i have, (1100mh nimh, and the graupner drive unit) it does easily 12-14mph, and will run for more than 15 minutes.

I built one with an OS 10 and Octura elec. hardware. I haven't ever radared it, but it really moves out.
tsenecal: does your electric boats start to skip at full speed, Ive had problems with my it skips and hits the water about ever 2 feet or so.

Hey Reb!
Motor (http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/item/DCM-231/400200/FAN-COOLED_6-12_VDC_MOTOR_.html) $3.75
Marine ESC (http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/158152.asp) $34.99
1500 mAh NiCd (http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/233050.asp) $9.99
1/10 Scale Cracker Box Race Boat (http://www.vac-u-boat.com/Vac-U-Cracker.htm) $49.95
That's less than $100 and you can easily make your own hardware out of inexpensive materials. ;)

The Vac U Cracker looks like a pretty cool boat, so for a $100.00 + a motor, not a bad deal, i would be a happy 14 old boy - money is never easy to come by

the Graupner 1160 hydro drive is an all in one unit, it doesn't need a rudder.
it includes motor, gearbox, propshaft, outdrive, prop.

The Zig-Zag Racer or the Reef Racer would be great for a kid of any age. I've got a ZZR and it's a lot of fun for the money.

smart_racer...
hmm, hobby-lobby doesn't have it on their website, but it is still in their physical catalog, give them a call at 615-373-1444... yeah i know its a long distance call, but that's why we all have cell phones with free long distance, right? :) I bought one of the ShortStuffs in 1983 at my LHS, and the other about 10 years ago from TowerHobbies.
