The submarine Hunley

I would like to build a model 30" to 36" length of the Confederate submarine Hunley. I did a search here and got no response. I contacted a person at The Hunley web site who said there may be some models available, but the Hunley people do not endorse any of these, and she was unable to provide a source. I have also asked her for a source of plans and have not heard further. Does anyone know of any models on the market or available plans? Size isn't too important since I can "upsize or downsize' as necessary. To answer your question before you ask, no, I don't intend to have it powered by 8 little people.;)

GO TO SUBCOMMITTEE.COM You can do a search and there are also some pictures of r/c Hunleys. The ones Ive seen were scratch built and I do not think a r/c kit is available.

Finescale Modeler, April, 1987 had an article on building a 1/24th scale display model.

JR. American Modeler, May/June 1974 had an article by Musciano on building a rubber powered submersible model.

National Geographic, July 2002 has an article on raising the
Hunley.

Cannot vouch for authenticity of the plans in the articles mentioned above.
Why don't you do a search on Google? See what you turn up.

Thanks for all of the great input re the Hunley. Very valuable information. I was aware of the National Geographic issue since I am a subscriber. For those people who may be interested, there is a fairly new book (published in April 2002) titled "Raising The Hunley" (301 pages) published by Ballantine Books (ISBN 0-345-447771-9). Also, TNT produced a movie called "The Hunley" two or three years ago which is available on video. Don't know about DVD.
Hopefully as information becomes available it will be posted here for future reference.
