Hi This is my first boat Build I decided to post it over here wasn't getting no reply in the race forum. (1) Where do you Balance a deep V it is 36in. long (2) When I built this Boat I though I put the rudder deep enough it turns well but after running it I am not happy with the stream of water coming through the pickup on the rudder. the boat comes up and runs on the prop like a surface drive bringing the pickup out of the water most of the time I was going to add a secondary pickup off the strut just in front the prop. and tee it in to the rudder pickup. or would it be better to ileminate the rudder pickup all together. You can see in the one pic that the pickup is above the outdrive. Thanks Dave

If I recall correctly, the balance should be 2/3rd of the way back from the bow.
It seems like I have read that on the boards a few times.

If you put a new water pick up off of the transom or strut, I would elimintate the rudder pick up to prevent back pressure, and any of the flow running out the rudder pickup and going nowhere.

Re; balance
generally you should do your initial cg(balance) at 30% of the boats length(as measured from the back of the transom, in this case 10.8"), then adjust from there. some setups may like it a bit forward/rearward of that location...but, that is a good starting point.

Thanks for the input guys. I was kind of thiking on the water pick up thats what I would be told but I figured I would check to see what others would think. The reason I was asking on the balance was I was having it go over backwards when I was hauling but another guy said and it makes sence that when Im launching of a foot wake it like jumping a giant wake for the size of the boat I made a mistake its 38 in. I will run it some more before I decide what im going to do with the balance. What will the tendencies be of a nose heavy boat will it jab the nose in of a wake also what will it do in cornering. Another question if you looked at the pics the out drive is I guess subsurface it has pleanty of power it runs up on the proplike a surface drive . what will lowering and raising do to afect the way the boat handles

38" hmmm that would be 11.4"(when measureing don't include the hardware hanging off the stern, just the planing surface). didn't see any...but trim tabs would help keep it from going over. bow heavy(wet) will slow the boat and may cause the boat to hook in corners(bow digs in and the stern flips around). right now it looks like a 'surface' drive (since you have a portion of the prop above the bottom edge of the hull). trim tabs will prolly be your best investment for the moment.

Thanks alot Rex R I dont know if I told you or you seen the other thread its a ops 67 modified the guy from the hobby shop said it should be in a bigger boat say 42 to 48 in. but I wanted fast. I hope you dont mind me picking your brain. Couple more questions (1) 38" from tip to stern that would be the planing surface correct?
(2)When I balance do I do it with a full tank of gas?
(3)I didnt make my self clear on last post but this is what i was trying to ask The out drive that I can raise or lower by loosining the strut what effect will raising or lowering it have on the boat.
(4) Trim tabs how do you determine where to put them on the boat at the water line is this correct. Man I could probably come up with 20 more questions for ya. Thanks again Dave

well I've only just started fiddling bout with boats(6 mo)...and have mainly been concentrating on fast electrics...but I have read a fair bit. will answer what I can.
1)right bow to transom, 2)er guess it depends on the size of the tank...think I would use half tank, 3) not sure think it would vary the lift on the stern, 4) with race boats the trim tabs are placed bout 1/16" up from the lower edge of the hull(lemee see ifn I can dig up a pic)
not the best pic but it does show the tabs http://www.finedesignrc.com/boats/h2oufo/h2oufotransom.jpg hth

Well I made a new water pickup out of brass tube and a piece of flat brass to give it strenght. I mounted it to the side of the rudder mount. Its about a half inch left of the rudder. I hope it dont effect the steering I think I will be alright it should pull alot better water the inlet and brass tubing is alot bigger. Dave

Yesterday I primed the hatch boy I thought I was introuble after spraying the first coat I was noticing I could smell it so I stepped out for fifteen minutes to let it flash and I was getting a sharp pain in my left lung found out that the straps were too loose on my mask so tightened and that solved the problem. Lung pains went away after an hour or so thought I was going to have to go to the doc. Today I mixed the paint 2/1/.5 that would be paint 2part thinner 1part hardener half part. Sprayed it and turned out nice a couple specks of dirt but thats to be expected in the garage. Went to clean the gun noticed no laquer thinner :( Oh no this stuff sets off in an hour three coat paint flash between coats =15x 3 45min to spray each coat maybe couple minute not much time left to clean gun. about fifteen minutes if that or you might as well throw it in the trash. Lucky Home Depot is only 5minutes away. Got back with the thinner in time to clean the gun lucky had 1/2in paint in bottom of gun because it takes longer to set. :). Next time I will make sure I have thinner at home. Dave
