jsut had to ask how critical is water cooling a eletric motor in a boat... i have yet to get the gear for my setup, was wonder ing if its a bad idea not to have it

1st, it won't hurt anything.

2nd, it depends a lot on the motor you use. And how you use it.

If you use a motor that takes little power to run satisfactorily then water cooling most likely is not needed. On the other hand, if the motor uses lots of battery power and generates a lot of power in return it will be building enough heat that water cooling should be used.

ESC's are a whole other consideration as well.

After you run your motor for a while, if it is hot or you can't keep your hand on it for more than 10 seconds then it should be water cooled.

i trial run it and see how it goes

I would check it after a few minutes adn keep doing that. You could terminally damage it from one super heated run if it is really being over worked.

Yes, definitely check it after one minute max when you are first trying your boat. You may need to try several different props to get the motor to run efficiently and not overheat. Check it at 1 minute, then 2 minutes, then 3 minutes, etc.

Mike,
Cooling an electric motor is critical only if the motor is run beyond it's normal voltage ratings for longer than just a very few seconds. Trying it and keeping track of the motor's temperature before putting it into a boat is one way of finding out. If it gets to the point where you can't hold it comfortably, it's too hot so quit. If that's the case, then cooling ~may~ be an option. Another one of those try it and see thingys.

Im not sure about your question. If you mean the metal tubing coil then you need to just put it on the motors can but I think you know that. Im confused.

Are you refering to the flux ring around the motor can.

A band of tubes>? I requires a coil of tubing one laer thick around the majority of the middle of the can on the motor and hook that up toa water pick up.

i was referring to the metal strap that holds the motor to the mount,, i hope that doesnt effect my motor angle to much haha, should be adjustable
