I was thinking when looking at the latest 'which simulator is best' thread that although we all see them time after time the usual question is always around the physics of the sim. Sometime qualified with 'I don't care about the graphics'.

Well I thought I'd pose the question does the graphics matter? I would have thought that having a realistic looking model on a realistic background would be of enormous help with orientation, depth perception etc. Whilst the physics are important are they more important, equal or really less important compared to a quality representation of the environment?

Well, I think they both matter. Poor physics can't be hidden by realistic model design and the best physics will not be appreciated if the model looks schematic. You have ClearView and know how to make a model for it. To experiment, make a simplified blob and try to fly it using Raptor 60 as template. Then compare your experience when flying the Raptor 60 from the sim.

It is easier to make eye candy than build realistic simulation engine for 3d rc flight. That is why all sims these days try to add some visuals instead in-depth simulation.

IMO, flashy graphics can be appreciated easier than fine flight model. I suspect that some/many beginners are sold on looks alone...
Remember CSM simulator? It had awful graphics (just color filled polygons) but was highly regarded as very accurate. There are still hard-core CSM fans around.
