Was looking for comments on the Y/A f18s
Am in the market for buying my first jet. Ive seen the twin f18 at a show and was extremely impressed by its size and scale detail, but i think id be terrified to fly it ( or more honestly crash it and lose it) so i was focussing on the smaller model, with the thought of putting a MW 54 into it.
Can anyone comment on its handling and performance with that size of turbine

Hi Birdseed,

the Yellow Aircraft F-18 seems to fly very good, one of my club mates here in Houston had one for a long time, it flew ver well.
I see that Yellow Aircraft has it in an ARF form, although I do not know if it is set up for turbine use or not.
Good luck.

Yellow F18 (single) is a good "trainer" but so is the Avonds F15. That one will take turbines in the 15-30pound thrust range.

Yellow Bug is a great plane, but if you do it get the scale gear. Bugs have a thin trak with straight legs and can tip in a fast taxi. Dog Leg Struts halp alot. But that a bug thing not just a Yellow bug thing.

yf23blackwidow,
no idea on price on f14, but no it wouldnt be a good trainer, quite the opposite, it would be for a very, very experienced jet pilot.

No,

The Tomcat wouldn't be a good first jet for a couple of reasons. One--it's relatively expensive and complex to operate. Two--it's not available yet!

I have a Yellow Aircraft A-4 still in the box. Pre-sheeted foam wings and stab. I have a OS 77 never fired and a fan unit. Anyone know what this might be worth? I will never build it and need to sell it.

Hey, Why dont you try contacting Yellow Aircraft :D

Seriously though you can change the spring rates in the the oleo struts to suit preferred ground handling and the models weight. The "strut holder thingies" are called trunion blocks and these are also available directly from Yellow...

The struts should weigh about 6oz or so.

Check out this build thread it has a lot of good information on the YA F18 single

Wow now thats light weight now do i HAVE to buy their retract air set or can i use any one on the market.

Take this from experience.. just BUY the set from the manufacturer, as its known to work w/o needing modifications.

The YA F-18 single requires a reverse retracting unit.. In which the strut retracts up the opposite direction the air cylinder points. If you dont have this kind of retract unit the semi-scale main strut will hit the air cylinder and not allow the gear to go up all the way.

In my case im not using the YA F/A-18 Im making my own model using Jetset44's f18 pdf plans. Im converting them to the max so they work off of twin 70mm fans, 2x 18.5volt 4000mah 5s lipos, YA F/A-18 struts and retracts, and many more things. Read my build thread on this. I can edit this model anyway i have to.
