View Full Version : Lithium Grease on ParkHawk Gears

I thought the ParkHawk was too noisy running without any grease on the gears, so decided to experiment with it a bit. I settled on Gunk Brand Lithium Grease (Spray form) and covered the sails with newspaper, and carefully sprayed just the teeth and the bearings. Then to prevent slinging grease everywhere in flight I wiped everything down with a tissue paper. The result was a light coating of grease on the gears and nowhere else.

My observation is that the noise is cut by half. It really was effective in that regard. It also seemed as if the bird flapped faster, and it seemed that she climbed out better after the treatment. But that was more subjective and may have been due to the placibo effect.

The bottom line: the gear noise was cut way back, and the bird seemed to fly better too. Has anyone else tried this yet? If not, it is worth considering - just don't spray the sails because I think it might show.

Remember: A pretty bird is a happy bird.

I like the sound it makes. Got any lubricant that keeps the sound but lubes the gears?

How about WD-40? It is thinner than Lithium grease, and shouldn't be as effective on the noise reduction. If you don't like it, wait a while and it will evaporate! It could be the best of both worlds.
