Well, I built a new scratch F3A plane. Still got some tweaking to do, but I really like the motor mount.

1/64 carbon sheeting, laminated with 3mm depron. It works really well. Super light weight...motor mount = 3 tenths of a gram.

Anyway...here's some pics.

Looking good. Big ailerons!

Racer...you'll see it fly tonight.
Im hoping it will fly good. Came in at 5.63oz....here's for wishful thinking.
I used your sandwiched landing gear idea....you're right...that is the way to mount them. REALLY solid.

I am going to get some acetate from Tony, and mold the canopy from clear acetate. Should look really sharp once its finished.

I really like the cowl intakes. They look cool. Its gonna suck trying to repair them if I knock the nose off though. Hopefully I wont have to.

Nice plane. Attach the intakes with a bit of tape so they knock off easily. Then you can just reattach them.

156g, man thats light!

I'm interested in seeing how it flies.

The horizontal stab is a good inch below the thrust line on the Hypnosis. I'm not sure how that affects the way it flies. I am still trying to find (and exterminate!) the cause of the Troll's rudder-roll coupling. It has a similar elevator offset.

Oh, it turns out the gear idea is not original. I found the manuals for the Phaser and the Aito online. The Phaser has something very similar but it grabs less of the carbon rod than my method. I hadn't seen this when I came up with my idea though.

Aito Manual (http://www.donuts-models.com/notice_aito.pdf)
Tribal Manual (http://www.donuts-models.com/notice_tribal.pdf)

I cut down the rudder a little...it was way too big. If the rudder extends above the top wing, it makes it roll when rudder is input. I built the hypnosis as a trial plane. If it works well...Im thinking about building an indoor foamy brio pattern plane, and spending much more time on making the fuselage more rounded. I think Ive figured out how to "mold" the depron to a specific shape.

Perhaps even have a built up wing too.

OH...and the entire plane is made of the new Midwest Cellfoam 88 instead of Depron. Perhaps it is lighter foam.

Racer,

Nice work finding those manuals.

Bryan,

Looks good, what is the wingspan and length?

27" wing x 30.5" length

We flew it last night. It actually flys really REALLY well.
Smooth, slow, nice indoor plane. It flys alot like racerxsky's troll. It kinda looks a little like one too.

Im seriously considering building a indoor Brio pattern plane using a boxed in fuselage like this, and even a shaped airfoil wing. Think about it. You could laminate two sheets of depron, with a carbon wing tube to make an airfoil and it shouldn't weigh anymore than a biplane wings.
Trick is...will an airfoiled wing actually create lift at these slow speeds.

Here are some more pics of it.
I finished molding the canopy...not that great, but it works.
You can see the modified rudder shape. I also clipped the cowl scoops. and trimmed things up a bit.

I think its a pretty cool airplane. Flys great too. The fuselage looks hard, but its really easy to build these built up fuselages. Not hard at all. I think Im gonna stick with them. The added drag off that fuselage is a nice benefit.

Oh yeah, one more tip for you guys.

The lettering...just go to Micheal's and look in the foo foo scrapbooking section. There are HUNDREDS of ready made typefont stickers, in all different colors and stuff. They also make them matte finish to match the foam, and they are usually VERY thin mylar, so they dont add much weight.

Nice work, the plane looks like the business.

How do you fix the carbon plate to the foam,
And stop the motor ripping it out ?

I just CA'd it to the foam. It seems to work just fine. No problems yet.
