What hacker for a wemotec EDF minifan 480

We suggest using the B40-9L, MAS 70-O-Flight, and a 5S LiPo. With this system you should be well over 500 watts.

Would you also recommend the same motor/ESC combo for a 3' diameter fan like the wemo 609?
Would the b40-9l handle the additional torque required?

The better motor for a 609fan or similar can be found in the B50-xxS range. The torque as you mention become an issue and the smaller motor is prevented to operate at its optimum efficiency.

For 4-5S applications in such a fan you need a kv=1700-2200 give or take a little.
