Anybody out there recommend some books on aerodynamics and aircraft design. The book doesn't neccecarily have to be about model airplanes, in fact I'd rather have info on full scale planes. I've looked around, and so far I've seen Amazon has some good looking books. I'd like something as advanced as a College 101 type class. Nothing outragously complicated. Let me know what books you like!

Brett,

Here're some books:

David F. Anderson, Scott Eberhardt, _Understanding Flight_ is probably the best, simple book for a conceptual understanding of flight, althought the book is full of outrageous typographical errors.

Illustrated Guide to Aerodynamics, by H.C. 'Skip' Smith is also a useful, quick read.

Martin Simons, _Model Airplane Aerodynamics_ is, IMO, the best all-around book for modeling.

_Introduction to Flight_, by John David Anderson is *the* classic Aero 101 textbook; unfortunately, this book costs around $130, new. Hope your math/calculus isn't rusty like mine.

G'luck,
Chung

I agree with Chung, Martin Simons has wide experience in models and full size and has a way of putting over the things that are normally difficult to explain.

'Model Flight' by Martin Simons - ISBN 0 85242 938 X

Most copies I've seen are very well thumbed, and not easily available second hand - must be worth having!

AirVenture:
These Books may or may not be in print.
1)"Aircraft Performance,Selection, and Design";by Francis J. Hale;1984.
2)"Theory of Flight";Richard Von Mises;1945&1959.
3)"Airplane Performance Stability and Control";Perkins & Hage;1949.
4)"Technical Aerodynamics";K.D. Wood; 1935.
The book I use the most for model analysis is (4).

P.S. The most comprehensive book on drag of anything is "Fluid-Dynamic Drag" By Hoerner. For example he shows how to calculate drag of stoped props and windmilling props plus much much more.

Model Aircraft Aerodynamics from Martin Simons is a must have, although the book was first published in 1978.

The following link will give you an overview of his books and ISBN numbers.

AirVenture,

Check out "Design & Build Your Own R/C Aircraft" by Kenneth L. Smith which was published in Canada by Robson House Hobby Supplies, 222 Clareview Road, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada T5A 3Y5. This 85 page spiral bound booklet is easy reading and covers everything you need to know to design your own R/C plane in plain English(pun intended)!

Best regards,
wattsup:) :) :)
