This photo shows one in a speed controller - it's the little brown thingy between the FETs. A similar device has burnt out elsewhere on the board.

The inscription is 1A5.

Looks like a surface mount capacitor to me.

Thanks. I think it most likely is a capacitor.

I was hoping that the 1A5 code would indicate its capacitance, working volts etc.

I wonder if it is 1R5 i.e. a 1.5 Ohm resistor? Put a meter across the good one to measure it.

Reminds me of the (very) old Vantec speed controllers. They used a bank of relays which hit certain resistors and then varied the top voltage permitted. The capacitors were used for arc supression. Many capacitors dry out after ten years of service, unless used weekly.

From where its mounted (between the FETs) do you think its maybe a biasing resistor. Of course, if thats the case would that not mean one or more of those FETs is probably smoked.
It makes sense to me but then again, my electronic talents are almost as good as my singing. :D
