If you look back a bit, Toes and I worked on some DIY kort nozzles with some luck. You could easily adapt this method to a larger kort nozzle.

I recieved a surprise addition to the TBA boatwerks werkshop this morning courtesy of one of the parental units. I hope this werks (er...works!) I think I'll still be on the lookout for a 500mah trickle charger but, this one claims to be smart and will charge and a very reduced rate indefinitely after the batteries are topped off.

Whilst viewing Mr Kmots thread (very interesting by the way) on FLAGS, Mrs Toes wandered away and started to look at the other pages on the website Mr Kmot mentioned..
Half way down the 'Doll's / Crew' page, Mrs Toes spotted (and drew my attention to) a SPRINGER
http://www.demo.com.hk/dollboat/dollboataccessories.htm
Aparently this chap in Hong Kong makes Springers...
http://www.demo.com.hk/project/tailormade/tailormade.htm
Questions..
Why did we not know of this before?
Is this the begining of the end for the home-built Springer as we know (and love) it?
Are there to be a plethora of China made RTR 'knock off' Springers arriving in the LHS soon?
Are we to be innundated at out local pools by RTR Springers on 27mhz radio frequencies and using cheap car motors... causing mayhem and destruction?...
Does this mean the end of this thread?
These questions (and others.. obviously) need to be answered...
Yours Sincerely
'Worried of Vancouver, Wa'

Any ideas on how to make a STANDARD Springer back in a reasonably straight line? Has anyone added additional skegs or keels, on the back or front with any success? How about bilge keels?
After a year of operating my first Springer, I can make it back reasonably straight, unless I let the prop walk get ahold of it. Then it just pinwheels until I give it a bit of forward. My boat has just a small keel as required by the rules to play water polo.

Motors can be anything you like. from the cheap ($12) Tamiya 'can' from Tower to some of the more expensive car motors. The beauty is that the motors are easily interchangable.

I would like to build one of thees but I am a complete novice at boats.
How do I seal the motor shaft?

Welcome FlyingCheetahs.. to the bestest thread on the Net.
The motor shaft can be had from many sources and is just a tube with a drive shaft and a pair of bearings, one at each end of the tube. Grease in the tube stops the water getting up the tube and in to the boat.
Look at 'Shaft / Stuffing Box' :)
http://www.harbormodels.com/site08/main_pages/propulsion.htm
Arrow 5 was experimenting with Blue Core foam sheathed in ply..

Sep 08, 2008, 04:02 AM
Yes Cheetahs, welcome, the blue-cor system works well. 1/16th ply skin bottom,1/8th sides and glassed with model aircraft wing skinning grade woven cloth f/glass and epoxy to make a bullet-proof unsinkable (dont ask) Springer. Pics below, she is still going strong, been out in ice and sunshine, rain, wind etc etc. Not a traditional build but it works. You might have to carry some ballast to bring it up to "racing weight".

How do I seal the rudder shaft?
p.s. Nice looking boat. :D

Sep 08, 2008, 12:08 PM
Check the link Toesup gave in his post. Note that my hull is thick slabs of blue-foam not fan-fold (too flimsy) the two side pieces are the Springer profile and the front and rear are nose and tail pieces are solid blocks. The "engine room" box is lined with 1/16" balsa well sealed and contains all the gear, motor, batteries sitting as low as possible. The R/X and speed controller and rudder servo are on a shelf to the back of this area , high up so as not to collect any bilge water. Drill this shelf with a few random holes for drainage too. A music wire rod goes to a proprietary rudder tube from your LHS, grease will keep water out but make the top of the tube well above the waterline. Make sure you get a brass rod rudder shaft so you can solder a 2" sq. rudder to it. A simple brass tube pushed through the foam would do just as well with a close fit (greased) rudder shaft. Let the bottom of the tube protrude about 3/16" , epoxy top and bottom. Hope this is clear.

OK I see.
Are there any tiled plans for letter sized paper?
Thanks :)
CG Bob
Sep 08, 2008, 02:44 PM
I don't think that tiled plans are really needed as this isn't a complicated model. If you follow the original plans (http://nwrcsm.freeyellow.com/springer.PDF), the steps to lay out the hull shape are pretty easy.
Cut your two side pieces 18" long.
Make a mark every 1" along the deck edge (top of the side), you should have 17 marks between the bow and stern.
Use a square, extend the the lines down towards the bottom.
At each line, measure down from the deck the appropriate length and mark. The bow mark is 1 & 5/16", the next mark is 2 & 1/2", etc.
Connect the dots or marks to determine the hull bottom shape.
Cut out the sides.

Support 'struts' (Keel's and bulkheads) will still not make it strong enough. It may seem rigid, but with motor, radio and (especially) batteries, foam of that thickness will not be enough support without either a ply facing or GF'ing.

Cheetas, I warned against using fanfold. Your boat is far too flimsy, look again at the link Toesup gave regarding the construction of my Coastguard Springer it is virtualy a solid block of Dow-Corning blue foam made up from 1.5" thick sheets. There is no merit in lightweight construction methods. You will have to carry a lot of ballast, even with two gel-cells .
