We have one giant-scale enthusiast in the club who has access to our mower and keeps cutting the grass to golf-green lengths.
Before I climb up on my high-horse and etc. etc., I'd like to get some feedback on what is a reasonable length to mow the field to.
Our field has no irrigation and other means of watering other than natural rain.
Thanks in advance!

Obviously you've never worked on a golf course.
Extremely high maintenance (fertilizer, watering, etc.) Very expensive and time-consuming (have a nephew who's a groundskeeper and golf course engineer.)
In our case, if means that the tractor is being run literally on the bottom edges of the blade shroud, hitting rocks and swales, and generally ripping the grass to shreds, and wearing out the new tractor.
What I'm looking for is information on the length used by other clubs.

We have paved main runway, but we keep the sides (35ft out) mowed and rolled to golf course lengths with no irrigation. Tell him just to raise mower deck over bad areas.

At my field, the runway is kept at about 3/4" to 1" long, and the grass lining the runway is kept at 3"+ to slow down planes that may overshoot the runway.

I keep my runways short "golf greens" mostly because they are easy to maintain. No trees, bushes or obstacles makes mowing them faster than the rest of the mowing jobs here on the farm. And because some of my smaller planes have smaller wheels than the biger 1/4 scale size wheels. I usually mow twice a week to keep the hay from being a problem. I do roll the runways to keep them smooth and I sometimes run the vac. Even though I do have irrigation available we haven't needed it this year cause we have been getting rain often enough to keep them green. Now if I can keep the kids from putting divots when playing golf and if they will pick up thier brass when they shoot skeet I will have an easy job of maintaining my runways. Nuf said, Jim

It's what happens to a GiantScale plane when someone tries to mow the grass to short with it.
